edited September 2018 in Outages

It is local news but would like to share.

Yesterday a large earthquake hit Hokkaido, second biggest island in Japan, and made entire island blackout.
Bad/good news is not much fatal causalities reporeted, compared to scale of the quake.
For hosting industry, there are datacenters of Japanese major hosting provider, SAKURA internet.
Their DC have reserved oil to sustain the first 48 hours. Although the power outage and other infrastructure disruption may continue more than a week.

Another few days ago, a large typhoon hit middle west of mainland Japan and Korea. it seems some datacenter commonly used for DR location were affected.

Prepare your geo redundant backup. disaster may happen anywhere, anytime.

Earthquake after typhoon#21, and then typhoon#22 is incoming.

    That's a little bad luck.

    Whatever, take care of yourself.

    Hope everythings ok.

Hopefully the nuclear plant will not leak anything.

  • Thanks all.

The only one nuclear plant in Hokkaido had been under maintenance.
Some part of cities light up now but power supply still cannot cover all demand. The largest coal power plant in area that is close to the epicenter needs time to replace damaged generators.

  • Hope all the best for Japan! Stay safe!

  • Almost 99% of the affected area were powered now. The DC was also recovered to normal power supply, survived 60 hours of emergency generator backup.
