Need Suggestions

Hi all, i have in Making Video Sharing site, similar to streamable. Where people can upload their videos, but on my site, limit is different. Only 20sec and max 50mb size are allowed to upload. So it's basically a "Clip site".

Now i need decent Dedicated Server for Video Storage, i had a look at Hetzner's auction Servers, i've found 28€ Intel Core i7-2600, 2x4 TB Server. But i heard that Hetzner aren't very stable and reliable.

So i'm looking for Hetzner alternative, my budget is not big (at the moment), arround $50-$80.

I'm expecting over 100k traffic a day. Do you think my budget is too small?

I would appreciate your advice and suggestions. Thank you.

  • If you're streaming only and not doing any transcoding most normal servers will fit your needs. You might consider adding a CDN like Cloudflare, etc to your site to help take some of the load off your back end server.

Hetzner is fine in stability and reliability. It's just that their network is faster in Europe than outside of it. You want your servers or at least CDN endpoints to be near where your viewers are.

Yes, of course i will add my site behind Cloudflare.

"Not doing any transcoding". I'm planning to have a script, which will automatially compress video file size. Does that mean transcoding?

Awesome. Cloudflare can help with that right?

    yes, it is

If you planning to make huge site.

    • Do remote transcode
    • Store the video file in cluster after transcoding

Dont ever relay on single server

    Thanked by 1thammy321

  • Quick update guys.

Couple of days after i posted this, i bought Hetzner auction server for 25 a month and setup everything.

1 month later my site has got over 1M traffic and record was 17k people at once (watching short clip).

Hetzner is in my opinion good option.

In general, CloudFlare reserves the right to not cache files if you're running a for profit site that serves videos using up terabytes of bandwidth.

Just be careful not to piss off the CF guys, and you should be fine.

Soyoustart / OVH (They are the same)

Are the best companies to start something with cheap price, also they offer Anti-DDoS for Free, it will prevent headaches in the future (believe me).

After that you can expand more, once your earnings are growing. To start I think you don't will find better than this, mainly with Anti-DDoS Included for free.

  • +1 for Hetzner.
