What VPS Provider Has the Best Network in the US and EU?

What provider(s) would you guys recommend as far as having the best network in each of those markets?

For the US location I'd like to have good pings to LATAM, and for EU just a generally well peered host will do.

Nothing special as far as specs go, a 1 core/GB box with SSD/NVMe drives will work fine. Just looking for a good, solid network with fast pings to the widest audience possible.

Thanks!

I would say OVH is pretty well connected in EU.

Would go for @Hetzner_OL or @clouvider / @vmhaus in EU

The Hetzner Finland routing experience was trash, but sure their Germany connection is decent. Just don't go for Finland now if you want good routing, maybe in the future though!

  • For south america (from the US) and the US in general, I'd advise @vapornode

    +1 @Clouvider

There are also some VPS providers here on LET using Clouvider infrastructure. I do have a VPS from InceptionHosting @AnthonySmith which is performing really good. @vmhaus has some neat addons like free BGP sessions. Just to mention some. :)

Allow me to elaborate: I bought a server in Argentina, and downloading updates from the official ubuntu.com went kinda slow at 500kbyte/s. Downloading from my very optimized OVH server in France (BBR congestion algo) went at around 2mbyte/s. Downloading from my (also BBR) server at vapornode maxxed the line speed in seconds at 100mbit.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, really appreciate it. Taking a serious look at @Cloudvider and @VMHaus for EU.

Now for the US, starting to look into @Vapornode. How's the network for the rest of the US? Not finding anything on PeeringDB. Those are some great numbers to LATAM though, may grab a small box for LATAM only and then another one for the rest of the US.

What would you guys suggest for a US-only provider in terms of network quality?

  • @integritly Our VPS services are located in Tampa, FL, USA - just wanted to make sure that was clear.

Here is some info for you about our network there:

For Latam try vps or dedicated servers in Miami. Its better if the provider have connection or route with Telefonica .

  • Vultr in London is primarily Level 3 and GTT. Fast network! Or Hetzner in DE

Choopa has no GTT in London.

  • iirc Hetzner had terrible pering with DTAG and maybe some cable ISPs in Switzerland/Germany. But that was years ago. Any updates?

  • Hetzner does not have DTAG peering included in the default bandwidth mix to be fair to the majority of budget customers.
AFAIK it's available as an opt-in add-on for just €4.20/mo (your server's transfer allowance is the limit)

Hetzner doesn't have a DTAG peering at all. The add-on traffic payment is for Core-Backbone transit.

Core-Backbone have a great network, including great DTAG connectivity.

I checked with our network team and @jackb is write. We do not offer DTAG peering. --Katie, Marketing

Any test ip for a "double-paid traffic" enabled server?

I don't have a hetzner IP w/traffic add-on to try, but the route to DTAG should be ~3ms from Hetzner Falkenstein to Core-Backbone Nuremberg, then will look a bit like this (add ~3ms):

     2 ae0-4018.nbg30.core-backbone.com (81.95.15.61) 0.463 ms 0.484 ms ae0-4031.nbg20.core-backbone.com (80.255.15.101) 0.391 ms
     3 ae1-2001.fra10.core-backbone.com (81.95.15.162) 3.443 ms ae1-2003.fra20.core-backbone.com (80.255.14.82) 3.196 ms ae1-2001.fra10.core-backbone.com (81.95.15.162) 3.391 ms
     4 f-ed9-i.F.DE.NET.DTAG.DE (87.190.233.1) 3.293 ms 3.322 ms 3.279 ms
     5 217.5.118.137 (217.5.118.137) 8.104 ms 8.078 ms 8.089 ms
     6 217.5.118.137 (217.5.118.137) 7.988 ms 6.931 ms 6.898 ms
