Moving some Windows Server VPSs to another provider

pr0bepr0be Member

I work for a very small hosting provider and we provide Linux and Windows VPS servers. We want to focus on Linux and stop offering Windows so we are not renewing our Microsoft SPLA contract. Our Windows clients will be advised to find another provider but we have to keep some Windows VPSs around so we need to buy some Windows VPSs and move the services.

To minimize the moving effort we would like to snapshap our current Windows VPSs, upload the snapshot image to the new provider, change IP configuration, change the Windows License Key to one issued to the VPS provider, update DNS and be ready to go.

The windows guests have virtio drivers installed (current virtualization is Linux KVM).

Any detail that i'm missing for this to work?
Any reputable providers that support this?

  • Seems like you're ready to go at this point.

@Francisco over at BuyVM uses KVM over at his place so migrations should work just fine.

Only thing you might need to keep in mind is if you're trying to use Hyper-V is you're stuck with generation 1 since most hosts only do BIOS based machines.

License key wise, depending on how the provider does things, you might be able to get away with only using a KMS client key if they do provide a KMS server.
