Wanna get an oldschool MP3 player for my dad and the one Im looking at has a size of 4GB. Now I have everything on my Phone but to those of you still familar with oldschool MP3 players, how far does 4GB get you for music? How many songs for an estimate?

    Assuming an average size of 5mb, 800 songs.

    Ok, cool :) Because I found a really nice one powered by an AAA battery which is a MP3 player and usb stick at once so you can just plug it in and copy the files over :)

    Would 5mb in size assume smth around 128/192/2xx kbits (music quality)?

    I've just averaged that based on info on the internet, I think the average for 128 is 3.5mb.

    Sounds like my old MP3 player, which still works but is only 256mb. Screen died last time it went through the wash but it was pretty small anyway lol.

    128Kbps = 16KB/s = ~1MB per minute of audio. 192 = ~1.4MB/m, 256 = ~1.8MB/m

    Cool hehe :) So having used an mp3 player like this, can you confirm it's really comfy to have an usb stick integrated into the player?

    Because alternative would be smth like this with bigger Display:

    Those stick-shaped players had terrible DACs. Enjoy shit sound quality.

    Probably not even worth going over 128kbit/s on your files for such stuff.

    I don't use it much now, but it was brilliant. One of the things I liked was the AAA battery - a lot at the time recharged from USB.

    The original headphones had a neck loop on them and it clipped to it to hang round your neck.

    The screen is a bit small, but just put it on shuffle and ignore the screen.

    So you would opt for one of the other kinda players? Budget is a mere 30€ so don't expect too much. Just so that he wont carry his CD Player and CDs errywhere anymore.

    4GB is really plenty for any reasonable set of selections short of a whole library. Usually the medium is 128mbit mp3s or 1 MB/minute, so 4GB is 60+ hours of music. Remember being oldschool, that is comparable to a rather big pile of cassettes or cd's. Usually users of portable or car players had only a handful of cassettes or cd's with them at any given time.

    I was never crazy about those USB stick players just because they were made like crap. I had several Sandisk players with USB cable ports and they were much nicer. The M200 series (M260 was the top, 4GB model) ran for 10+ hours on a rechargeable AAA cell which you could swap out easily so you weren't constantly trying to recharge the thing.

    You might look around for a player that can run Rockbox (rockbox.org). Lots of old Sandisks can do that.
