Better alternative to shared ovh?

DonJDonJ Member

I am looking for cheap shared hosting, are there any better alternatives to ovh to offer more than: 75 concurrent connections and 30 mysql simultaneous connections in the 2 euro price range? I'd go with ovh, but the mysql 200mb size limit is a bit low for my needs.

Also, why providers dont specify those values? I have to mail support to ask if there are such limitations for iops/process entry/etc.

WebSound has a very decent deals. The database size limit is 23.83GB on the "Medium" package.

Because most users don't care for this and too much information could stop them from buying fast.

In regards to DB size - because most providers either don't have a hard limit, or because it's the limit from the account itself.

Regarding concurrent processes for PHP and MySQL .. well - it tells you absolutely nothing about the provider and if they can handle the traffic or not - I know providers that give 2000 entry processes, but the CPU allocations are so low, that getting more than 10 processes will basically halt your site.

From the perspective of a hosting provider, if people are consuming 10-20 entry processes constantly, they should really look into their application, it means that there can be done plenty of optimizations.

Almost all high traffic websites we have use on average 3-5 entry processes when they're at peak, because the applications are optimized properly.

Those customers with 20+ entry processes, I usually tell them to fix it, give them pointers where to change stuff, and it's pretty often that they suddenly can do 10x traffic on the same account.

So, I think why most providers doesn't really mention it, is because it gives a false picture of what a hosting plan can do - and in reality most providers allocate entry processes, only as a safety measure for a single customer not being able to absolutely abuse a server to it's death.

Now - I know that shared hosting customers often tend to know a lot better than the hosting provider, and that their websites are 100% optimized - guaranteed™ but sometimes actually looking into just a slight optimization might help a lot, so you don't really have to care much about if you have 20 or 2000 entry processes - there's a lot more to it, than two numbers (IMO).
