The Great Puri.sm Outage of 2018

https://puri.sm/posts/the-great-purism-dns-outage-of-2018/
Our team at Purism is international and pretty good at taking matters in our own hands, so we decided to not just wait to see if 101domain.com was going to contact them. Our sysadmin Stelios contacted the San Marino registry office directly the moment they opened, and discussed the issue with their friendly staff. Remember that list of reasons why a domain might be suspended? This is the most relevant one:
“non-payment of the registration fee as required by the RA;”
That’s right, our registrar didn’t pay their fees to .sm so the registry suspended all of 101domain.com’s .sm domains, including ours.
tl;dr Do not use 101domain.com

Ouch. Thanks for the headsup.
And do not rely on obscure 3rd world TLDs for vanity reasons.
Because that will protect you from a registrar who doesn't pay their bills. Registrasr aren't ColoCrossing where the DC buys out the middleman with debt forgiveness.
San Marino isn't exactly 3rd world but yeah obscure still very much applies.
Is San Marino 3rd world for you?
I believe you're confusing it with some other country as it is pretty rich....
Calling San Marino "third-world" is obviously just a random slur with no ground in reality, but also, with no ground in terms of relevance to the issue.
Do you think "first-world" country registries are perfectly fine with their domains not being paid for by registrars under the agreed terms, just because they're rich enough they don't need money?
Spoilers: that's not how it works.
"third-world" was probably an over-simplification from @rm_'s side.
There's nothing wrong with being wary of a city-state, especially one that's dependant on Italy for nearly 90% of its monetary transactions.
That being said, seeing as you can still get .su domains, it seems like ccTLDs have a tendency of not dying.
Hopefully their domain is suspended again, just for consistently using "GNU/Linux" on their web site.
