Storage boxes

Apart from hetzner does anyone else do storage boxes (as in the ready to go has type)??
Thanks

  • OVH has something similar, but this is a mostly vps-oriented forum so products that show up here will tend to be root servers of one form or another. What exactly are you trying to do? I have some stuff in online.net C14 if that makes any difference. Not quite the same thing as storage box, but has its own pluses and minuses by comparison.

  • I'm interested in this too. But needs to be mountable for direct writes and ideally expose posix standard stuff + file notify instead of a half-working fuse mount.

Loop device backed by file on cifs mounted storage box should work in theory. I guess performace would suck though.

  • If you want online storage I think you're better off with a vps or dedi. This thing about fuse-mounting storage boxes seems to combine the disadvantages of both.

  • For some strange reason, pure simple storage with standard protocols is very hard to find. One could make a fortune by just renting cheap storage dedis, and slapping vsftpd on it lol.
About a year ago I did a long goolge research. Result:

There are mainly 4 types of offers you could consider.

    1. "Cloud" storage targeted at personal usage (backups, fotogallery etc.).
Sounds great, until you notice that you can only use it via webinterface, iOS and Android. No (S)FTP(S), WebDAV, SSH, rsync etc. Nothing that you can seamlessly integrate in your workflow, nothing to script/automate, nothing that you can just mount. Unless there is a proprietary, inofficial mount tool. But then its windows only, and got its last update 2 years ago. Or there is some commandline tool that uses FUSE to mount it, but performance sucks, and its just very unstable, and/or badly maintained. They also often have arbitrary limits like max. no. of files per folder, max. filesize etc.
      Example: hubic.com, google drive, dropbox

    2. "Block" "object" or "cold" storage.
Sounds cheap at first, until you do the math. The storage has the same problems as "cloud" storage, except that you can at least use an API instead of mobile apps. But APIs arent exactly "ready to go". You need to add a VPS in front of it to make it usable. Just perfect for all those docker-node.js-mongodb hipster-devs. But not as simple storage for endusers.
      Example: Amazon S3, Online.net c14.

    3. "File lockers".
More geared towards public mass-filetransfers than longterm storage for private use. Used 98% for warez. Again, usually no standard protocolls, arbitrary limits etc.
      Example: 1fichier.com, filer.net

    4. "FTP storage".
Jackpot!!! ...Until you realize that the 5 offers you found are actually the ONLY offers on the whole internet (don't let google fool you! Most FTP space offers you find are just the usual backup space addons of hosters for their dedi customers OR normal webspace SEO'd as FTP space), and that those offers (and website designs) seemingly haven't been updated since 1997. Because they offer like 5GB space with 20GB traffic for 59$ per month.
      Example: https://www.caorda.com/hosting-services/ftp-file-hosting/
      https://www.iweb-ftp.co.uk/price-list
      https://hostedftp.com/services
      https://www.drivehq.com/help/price/pricing.aspx

Then you finally find out about hetzner storage boxes and call it a day. OR you make up your mind and go for a non-ready-to-go solution via VPS/dedi.

But seriously: give us a lot more info! What are your requirements? Space, traffic, protocolls, filesizes, usecase...?

What exactly do you need / whats your usecase?
Depending on how much storage you need, this might be just right for you:
    http://www.rsync.net/products/platform.html#unix

    As for the price:

    @suckers said:
Actually if you are able to do your own versioning and snapshots, for instance with borg, then they have a price of 3 cents per GB per month.

    More details here:
    https://www.rsync.net/signup/signup_offer.html?code=f0a35f

    And http://www.rsync.net/products/attic.html

Public storage constant access http for some, archiving for others (but still needs to be immediately accessible via https, I serve it, so network mount pref over rsync. Rsync not work.

I see. But all the http stuff runs on some other server, right?
In that case have a more detailed look at rsync.net. Especially http://www.rsync.net/products/platform.html and http://www.rsync.net/resources/howto/remote_commands.html

They don't only offer rsync, but also full SSH with all its features (but non-root I guess). So, would it work for you, if you just mount it via SCP/SFTP/SSHFS? Or via FTP or WebDAV if you pay their normal price (= not those cheaper attic accounts)? Then it woud be mounted transparently on your server. I'm just not sure about the performace (which would also depend on the protocoll).

    Hello,

@OP We do hosted NAS but not sure it is what you're looking for, would you mind give us more details ? space ? price ?

    Thanks

  • Well I just want a few tb's of storage and a few tb's of bandwidth and easy access (samba, ftp and or sftp)... the stuff in storing is old stuff from portable hard drives I've decided aren't worth replacing but I might want the stuff off the drive one day

I used backblaze and stored 350gb ish on there platform but would hate to have to download it as it was so slow to upload and they charge per gb downloaded

  • Do you have an approximate budget in mind? It sounds like these are not files you regularly need instant access to -- maybe backups, or infrequently-used media? The use case and access pattern makes a difference in what kind of storage solution is best suited.

Most cloud providers offer some sort of object storage, some with various tiers of cost/availability, so the cold storage options might be worthwhile if you can accept the limitations.

You might consider Prometeus iwSea, a managed Seafile service.

If you are comfortable with basic Linux admin and security, I think the LET answer would be to get a cheap storage VPS and install your choice of samba, sftp, minio.io, etc.
