How to Improve Mac Performance

What is the basic checklist to look at to optimize mac performance?

If you have a SATA spinning drive, clone to an SSD and swap drives. Never really had to do anything beyond it.

What is it not doing that it needs to be optimized?

  • Indeed. "Optimizing performance" has never been a thing since my switch from Windows PCs. What is it doing slowly?

Had mine running slower lately. Safari was taking some time to start and the whole system felt like lagging. As much as I don't trust optimisation software I remembered "Onyx" once did miracles for another Mac that had this issue and decided to give it a go. Worked wonders for me.

  • i'm using clean my mac to ride junk and optimize my mac.

  • If your Mac is slow, buy a new one. There is nothing to 'improve performance', other than of course adding more RAM or changing to SSD. But you don't need any (junk) software. :)

    Buy a new Mac :)

Otherwise, fast SSD + more RAM + don't use the latest big OS version as they tend to make older machines much slower (saw that when upgrading an old Mini).

It's worthwhile to periodically look what's running, or have the Activity Monitor show CPU in its dock icon so you can go look when CPU is pegged.

On my mac, some websites will make a process called csprefsd or something like that run at 100%. I believe it's a combination of my adblocker + certain sites. It never goes away until I restart Safari.

Adobe products also routinely suck 15-20% of CPU in the background. Kill them unless you need that particular function at that very moment.

I've noticed Skype, Lync, etc. can consume tons of CPU depending on the network scenario.

RAM is one of the few things you can still replace on some iMacs...you can never really have enough RAM.

Oh, and I'm sure Meltdown patches will slow you down a bit :-(

  • Who would know what "performance" is being referenced here? You could, for example, use spray paint to improve its fashion performance. Stickers are also an option.

The only thing I have ever found to cause issues is with web browsing, the amount of blocking I do kills page loading time.

  • I'd echo the more ram and SSD if you can. Its whats allowed my 2009 13" MBP to limp along as long as it has. If you don't need a more recent OSX release, go back a couple. Performance has got worse and worse. (High Sierra causes the fans to ramp up quickly).

If you have a particularly old machine, consider replacing the CPU compound. Mine had become useless after 9 years and needed to be re-applied. (CPU temp was regularly 90c+)

Well until the OP comes back and tells us what is actually wrong, if anything then replacing the all or any parts of his system are not much help.
