When it becomes unprofitable to run it
i3d just retired them last year and replace them with x3440's on fail.
I guess with big hosts/dc's they retire them when they no longer make money, have no demand or take up space that could otherwise make more money.
Quantum leaps in computing power stopped in the early 2000's, a server from ~2007 can still fulfil many purposes, it'll most likely be retired once it's unfeasible to maintain.
Many of the older servers may be too large to be fired out of a cannon (as is tradition in the industry). Thus, instead, they must be left to crumble into dust on their own timeline, as there be no honourable alternative for their proper disposal!
Since remote hands are costly, these Valhala-bound servers will almost always be left powered on and plugged in to share their last gasping death rattles with the internet at large.
And that's where LET comes into the picture ...
Are you aware that a "Quantum leap", despite the public opinion, is a VERY SMALL and not a very big movement in Physics?
i3D’s business model relies on this indeed. But in their main location (Rotterdam, NL) They still have an entire corridor full of R210(ii’s) for game servers. So they’re still in use after 4yrs
Aye, in physics it's a small movement, barely perceivable.
The English noun describes it as an "a sudden large increase or advance". You're gonna have to take it up with Merriam-Webster
Miriam Webster, the porn star? ;-)
To be fair, the blame lies squarely with Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell.
We retire servers when they consume too much power, compared to the new ones. We still have Xeon 5030 in production, though.
some of them when is crashed , some others when is not profitable
