Is there anything that can do this? Scan emails for remote content, prefetch this content, cache the content locally and then rewrite the URI in the email?

    Not too sure if there a plugin for Roundcube for it, But I know RainLoop has that feature for external images.

    Yea roundcube is old school, it's maintained but features are not 21st century.

    You could write your own postfix filter, just have it add the image link into the email file.
