Get a Pi 3. Set it up at home. Play with locking it down and monitoring it online. Install different webservers, firewalls, etc. Play some more.. Setup file sharing, home torrenting of "linux ISOs", how about dns or emailing? The works. There are tons of tutorials online to get started on all these subjects and specifically for doing it on a PI. additionally the 1gb of ram will teach you to run lean. It's AMAZING how much can be done with 1gb of ram actually. The 3-4w max power usage means it can run 24/7 without concern.

Once your done with it and want a VPS you can purpose it into a emulator or home file server, or whatever you want.

Or you know. Get a VPS. Play with it a bit, get bored and end up letting the account go after a year.

Pro Tip.. TAKE NOTES.. Seriously you're going to repeat the same tasks over and over again or you wont do it for a year then have to remember how to do it later. Raspbian is Debian based also so it's easy to move what you learn to all debian based setups (Debian 9 or Ubuntu for example)
