I hate it when the day starts this way.

I'm starting to wonder about smartctl, though. This one says:

# smartctl --all -T permissive /dev/sdb
smartctl 6.6 2016-05-31 r4324 [x86_64-linux-4.9.0-4-amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

Short INQUIRY response, skip product id

=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART Health Status: OK
Current Drive Temperature: 0 C
Drive Trip Temperature: 0 C

Read defect list: asked for grown list but didn't get it
Error Counter logging not supported

Device does not support Self Test logging

But SMART Health Status is OK :-)

Meanwhile, its identical twin (same model, maybe bought at a different time) is sitting in the bay next to it:

# smartctl --all /dev/sda | grep -i Power_On
  9 Power_On_Hours_and_Msec 0x0032 000 000 000 Old_age Always - 922377h+17m+50.440s

922,377 hours, eh? Let's see, divide by 24, divide by 365...
