Openvpn won't connect; just hangs after some output

I don't really understand how the mitm openvpn wiki it points to in the error relates to the issue or other wise how to fix it. It stops at that point without finishing connection.

I am downloading the config files from the vpngate website.

Btw I am running on a qemu vm if that is pertinent and sshing in on my computer.

I added

remote-cert-tls server

as per the openvpn site's recommendation and the certificate warning went away however it still hangs without making a connection so it must be something else at issue. I tried stopping the firewall and trying again and still the same.

Here is the output where it hangs until I C-c

$ sudo !!
sudo openvpn thailand.ovpn
