@bsdguy Personally, I prefer that all of my providers host like oldschool telco equipment: In a closet managed by an ancient version of OS/2 next to the mops.

From what I see there are three types of providers. the high end, guys who have a reasonable basis for at least 3 nines or close to that (say, 99.7) ... and amateur losers.

You only mentioned the high end guys and the amateur losers, so which one is the third type of providers.

Pardon me, I guess I should have formatted it differently:

"From what I see there are three types of providers. a) the high end, b) guys who have a reasonable basis for at least 3 nines or close to that (say, 99.7) ... and c) amateur losers."

So in your personal opinion would OVH and Hetzner be considered high end guys, even though they have massive infrastructure and plenty of datacenters, they don't seem to be considered high end by man.

Btw can you set up RAID 1 in nocix / WSI?

Last time I requested from WSI, they said that they can't set RAID 1 for me

I’m running raid10 on one of mine. Have to do it yourself. They won’t help with much durig installation. Adding a USB stick is about as much.

They won't do that for you, you need to do it yourself.

Any tutorial how to do this?

Maybe I can search how to setup raid from rsysd, but I don't know how to install OS after that

If you want/need to reinstall the server, ask for kvm and boot from a USB/ISO. Follow the instructions.
Select "custom disk layout", wording might be different depending on OS.
create the raid array and then create your partition layout.

    Thats the tutorial in short.
Here is one example install : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsdwScqjuCU

Feel free to understand me in any way you deem fit. I'm not interested in nitpicking or religious wars.

They won't do this for you at WSI. You get the 3+ year old system rescue CD and you get to hold your own hand because you don't have enough space to emerge updates.

  • There's much simpler way to install own system with RAID on WSI/Nocix.
I've used this tutorial with their machines:
    http://www.houseoflinux.com/installation/how-to-remote-install-centos-6-via-vnc/

Seems to work also with CentOS 7, but the commands are different: http://www.danpros.com/2016/02/how-to-install-centos-7-remotely-using-vnc

  • bsdguy said: No, I find it insulting as you imply we're all idiots assuming e.g. piles of funny home UPSs being stacked up in DCs.

You inferred this in your original post expecting 'messages from the UPS's' which is exactly why I took to defining the differences in UPS's which are used at a data center. UPS systems are not setup in a way to provide 'messages' to your equipment so that statement made it seem like you didn't understand what hardware was used and how it works. So maybe you should step back and instead of taking it as an attack, take it at face value. Of course you could just be butt hurt and keep interpreting things personally, if thats what helps you sleep at night. You will notice I didn't take any specific stabs at you in my reply and tried to keep it informal, you on the other hand act as if I was attacking you for some reason? I understand a good amount about DC's and gen sets as I have worked in several data centers over my career and in my day job work for a company that maintains its own presence in 8 different major DC's around the world. My purpose was just to help clarify for you some of the inaccuracies of your assumptions, you on the other hand appear to be a 'data center genius', so, far be it for me to try to be helpful or contribute anything constructive.

    Cheers!

You only loose data if its not important otherwise there would be 3 copies.

I used the plural because there are pretty always multiple UPSs, be it due to n+1 configurations or be it because rather than 1 central UPS "cluster" there is UPS per row of racks or ...

Plus: Of course those UPSs send status messages. Even better "home" UPSs send status messages or, at the very minimum "I won't keep up much longer" messages. The difference is just where those are sent to and what's done with them. In any kind of halfway reasonable data center they are seen, monitored, evaluated, and used.

One loses data only if he has no backup. I even make a backup of my porn. I guess your data was less important than my porn collection.

You should always keep backups...that's something you should setup during you initial setup of your server.

Yes. I had backup of my data rsync'd to external server.
But due to this horrible experience, I decided to switch provider and moved to Clouvider.

    Welcome to a Clouvider !

We’ll make sure you’re happy with us during your stay :-)

  • My server was kaput and I ended up having to do a reinstall. Not sure what caused it but as it was pinging Nocix weren't interested. Its a trial server so a reinstall really wasn't an issue and investigating the issue fully certainly wasn't worth the time. So far this year I've been burned by VortexNode and PioHost so I really think its time I stopped playing with servers from budget providers and took up golf instead.

Yeah, or just pay the prices that are sustainable.

Yeah Nah. It's a hobby. There's no income from it. Summer hosts need to eat to.

I'd trust NOCIX over OP, because NOCIX actually owns their garbage-tier rather than reselling it like OP.

1tb mirrored backup space for $10/month. I’ll trust em with that.

I pray that you never, ever need it. For dual purpose reasons.

It fits your post operandi quite well. Buy three! Core2Duo that was available several hours ago is gone, but the rest are still there. I'm assuming they've lost their cheapies because of the X hours downtime. I can't trust them to work as a backup service, so I'll be letting mine go as well.
