Debian 8 -> 9 on OpenVZ VPS?

There is still no template for Debian9 on old OpenVZ (and might never be), so I'd like to ask if anyone successfully updated Debian 8 "Jessie" to 9 "Stretch" on OpenVZ-based VPS?

  • I've done it, it went pretty smoothly. Just edit /etc/apt/sources.list, apt-get update, and apt-get dist-upgrade.

    I had to fuss a bit with telling systemd not to rename the network interface to ens3 from eth0: one way is

    ln -s /dev/null /etc/systemd/network/99-default.link

    There's a Debian 9 template under the "Contributed" section - https://openvz.org/Download/template/precreated

    Upgrading works fine though.

  • Unless the host machine uses a really old kernel as I sadly found out :p

    Even a dist-upgrade to Debian 9 on a OVZ machine with a 2.6.32 kernel - which was released back in 2009 - worked for me.

    Thanks for feedback, I will try it too...

    Edit: all went well, except for non-root users, where passwords did not work and had to be re-defined again...
