I've used ophcrack successfully before. Not sure if it was on 7 or XP though.
Take out the disk, and mount it in linux live cd. If you don't encrypt your windows partition, you can search your data
Kon-Boot
thanks, i will try ophrack, do you have a user guide on how to use it?
+1 for Kon Boot. Ophcrack will take days if password is long.
Try Hiren's Boot CD

For me, removing password worked but changing didn't. Keep that in mind!
You need to have Windows 7 DVD or USB drive for this.

I was looking to see if NTPasswd works with 10, found nothing useful, and eventually ended up with the same URL @TheKiller posted.
Rescued the neighbour's daughter's laptop recently with ophcrack. Took less than 5 minutes. Was an XP machine though...
Hey no cd needed you need only to trick the cmd:
http://www.piotrbania.com/all/kon-boot/
I always boot a linux disk, mount that windows partition,
make a copy of sethc exe and replace it with cmd exe
Boot into Windows again and then you can open your cmd
by hitting Shift button multiple times. Now you can set a new password using net user
*p.s. Cloudflare is so ridiculous, blocking me cause of writing cmd[dot]exe
If you can access the USB ports, boot the laptop using a linux live distribution. If you haven't encrypted your drives, you should be able to access the data.
This livecd always worked well for me: https://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
Takes 5 minutes.
Kon-Boot, ez.
Get a hammer, Smack the shit out the computer, Throw it out the window (preferably into your neighbors yard or pool), Get a new computer, Blow the Windows virus off of it, Install Linux, Done.
You can reset Windows 7 password with Ubuntu Live CD:
or other softwares and methods:

Or use Ophcrack to find your original password.
Follow this Vultr guide. Adapt the parts like downloading the ISO, burning it to a USB (instead of mounting through Vultr). The rest is the same.

For the future, I'm using http://www.lazesoft.com/download.html, it's free for personal use, mount it on a USB stick, reboot, 1-2 click, and you have removed your password or reset it.
It would take hours if the password was strong enough. Ophcrack is not the first choice for password reset.
I can only tell you what happened when I used it - less than 5 minutes. I was heading back home after kicking it off, expecting it to maybe take until morning, and maybe fail to crack the password. I was just making small talk before I left and noticed that it had already spit out the password.
Thanks for sharing the details. I once did it on a win7 machine. but it takes around 3 hours to find the password. it is 7 pure digits password.
Actually, it is much faster by using other methods, like NT Password or simply enabling the default admin account:

If you only need to find some document in the disk, no need to find the Windows password. Just need to take out the disk and mount it on another computer. Either linux computer or Windows computer will work.
