In my home server I have (had) this 4TB HGST HDD. It was running a Windows Server 2012 (digispark version). At first I had only like 1,5TB partitioned and other was free. Some day I wanted some more space, and it started failing. I had no time to check what was wrong and did not care too much. Did not use more space.

One sad day when Windows wanted to install updates, I restarted the server. It did not boot anymore. There was corruption in boot. So I tried to add new partition and install ubuntu (since my digispark license was not valid anymore for installation). Installing ubuntu failed several times, so I found my old 1.5TB Seagate HDD and installed ubuntu there. I took all the virtual machine images out of the 4TB HDD and changed them to KVM images. Sadly, windows virtual machines don't start anymore (I guess because they are of generation 2 [again, did not have too much time to investigate]). But my main VMs are running fine on KVM. Yesterday I finally got some time to backup everything out from the 4TB HDD and prepare it for warranty check. I ran

shred -v -n1 -z /dev/sda

And I was willing to find more errors on the same sectors that had failed before. I was surprised, that there were no errors, and as you can see in the SMART log, Power_On_Hours is 13734, but the last error logged is at 13082 hours. Does this mean that the HDD is ok or should I still send it to the warranty check?

    Sorry, I don't find the way to mark all the SMART log as a "code", can someone comment how to do that? (I am kind of new here)

    Wrap the SMART output in < pre > < /pre > - obviously remove the spaces.

    You could have wrapped that code wrapper into code tags like

    ```
    ```

    Inception?

    Not sure

    Thanks, I wrapped the SMART output with pre tag, so now it looks better. Now back to the main question, does anyone know how should I proceed? Should I send it to the warranty check, or should I keep it as it is?

  • You should add raw values from smart...

    Also, errors look like OS was trying to switch sata modes... may be try changing cable?

    Long test it and see if it passes or not.

    Could you offer some tool how to test the HDD?

  • @MrEd with smartctl

    sudo smartctl -t <short|long|conveyance|select> /dev/sda

    then later:

    sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda

    @MagicalTrain thanks, the test is already running ;)
