You can try https://github.com/fzaninotto/uptime or monit or nagios or whatever
Ping checks work well for testing latency to the server and general network uptime.
If you're running a particular service on a vps, say a webserver or DNS, you'll probably want a service specific check as well.
I would say a service such as:
Statuscake
Nodeping
Pingdom
As they measure it from various locations around the world
Munin
Pingdom seems to be the most used option, it's quite good.
Smokeping (see demo). I just have this installed at home and monitor all my VPSes and servers.
Anyone knows a free solution allowing at least 2 servers for free, with SMS alerts? (Pingdom only allows 1 server

I'm surprised that no one has suggested Smokeping.
