Let's see...
40$/month for a modest server
45$/month for cPanel license
25$/month for up to 1000 users WHMCS
1320$ per year
In order to only return your yearly material investment you'll have to serve:
1320$/5$/users=264users at all the time, non-stop, 365 days of the year, no fluctuations
or
528 users half a year
or
1056 users per three months
or
2112 users per month and a half
Not counting marketing, billing support, customer support, server maintenance, unplanned, management and your own salary expenditures.
Many provides such resources at similar price. Look at buyshared. I guess the trick here is most of the shared hosting users get less than 50 visits per day and it is possible to manage even 1000 accounts on a single server. Many providers even cram 2000-3000 accounts in a single server. look at this explanation of well respected "stable host" https://billing.stablehost.com/knowledgebase/129/How-many-accounts-do-you-put-on-a-server.html
From this perspective the pricing of TNA hosting seems very logical to me.
