EU server for experimenting with IT, learning, studying and hosting videogames

Hi,
I'm looking for a vps/dedi to have a server on which to learn more about IT and eventually to actually host a couple of blogs and ecommerce websites, I'm currently selling products I make myself on ebay and amazon and I do have a blog about them, the wife is an artist who works a lot locally but has very little presence on the internet, my market it's a nice good for monetizing traffic and I have friends who might help with the webmarketing.

In the meantime I'd like to be able to do pretty much anything, and I'm ready to pay the higher fees for less restraining T&C. I dont plan to host porn or anything illegal but I might try out hosting games server, mining cryptocurrencies, transcoding media files, downloading legal torrents (Linux ISO mainly), helping out with long 3d rendering jobs, and having fun while configuring all this

I might do with different kind of setups, minimum 2GB RAM, decent drive space (not necesserally SSD but in excess of 60GB) and a good CPU with minimum 2 cores.
suggestions? price ranges? is it doable to play like I want to with a VPS and not get ur server shut down for unfair usage (torrent and mining)?

  • Looks like you're going to need some dedicated resources then!

I'd suggest BuyVM on the basis of having dedicated CPU, however the 'minimum' two cores would force you all the way up to their $30 package.

Scaleway might be an 'okay' idea, you can get quite a few dedicated cores on their baremetal ARM range for pennies, but they're not particularly fast - Think of a reasonably powerful tablet and you're about there.

For your use-case, i.e. long 3d rendering jobs, a dedicated server would probably be best in all honesty though - A cheap SoYouStart/Kimsufi/Hetzner box would likely give you the best value for money.

I would double check with any provider on mining cryptocurrencies. I don't think most VPS setups would allow 100% CPU use all the time. And BTW, CPU-based mining is not really cost effective anymore (atleast not the popular ones).

do they usually allow that on dedicated servers?
    what about torrenting?

I know, it's just for learning purposes, I figure I need to learn how to handle my own websites (for my business and the wife needs too) so since i'm getting a server I might also use that for extra cpu power when the wifey renders something and might start using it to host stuff like game servers for my friends and many more things I want to learn about, like cryptocurrencies

    thanks, I'll look into those.
I'll be around in the channel as well, I think I'm not the only one around here that runs a "personal private server" for home needs

    @dada216

It may seem daunting at first, but take a look at https://www.hetzner.com/sb.

Hetzner is a great company and you can snag a good dedicated server at a reasonable price.

For example - at a cost of 26.05 euros, you get the following:

    • Intel Core i7-3770 (4 cores, 8 threads @ 3.4Ghz base frequency)

    • 2 x 3 TB hard drives

    • 16 GB of RAM

Also, it has Intel HD Graphics, so you might be able to get some crypto-mining done, I guess.

I think on dedicated servers, you will not have this problem. You are not sharing the CPU with anyone. About torrenting, I think you need to ask them explicitly. I remember a recent thread about a customer getting suspended for running a seedbox (though it was a VPS and the ToS forbade using the server for this purpose)

Hi, see our KVM based offers in Frankfurt, Germany: https://www.kms-hosting.com/rootserver

  • What is your budget?

It's two threads (not two cores) but that's just being a bit pedantic...

    Hello,

Considering the future use and the freedom degree you desire you should really go for a dedicated server then it depends on your budget.

You need a dedicated server, and you need one in a country that is happy to allow you to break the law, so I guess Romania or Russia.

I don't understand how you infer "break the law" from the OP where it is explicitly mentioned:

@nullnotthere "torrents" and I chose to live in the real world where people don't just mirror ISO's and in fact watch game of thrones.

To be fair, OP takes extra effort in his post to clarify that it's his intention to download legal stuff.

Then again, saying "linux isos" online is mostly synonymous for "game_of_linux_s06e07_1080p.mkv"

Well maybe I am just a cynic :)

I was indeed testing the ground by asking that question, I've also asked it to every provider who contacted me in private, but I really don't plan to use it to torrent game of thrones but only linux iso. Since I opened the thread I learned about seedboxes and all that, and I indeed used to run a dc++ node from home, so I might have been interested in them a long time ago but not anymore, I'm an adult now and I have no more time to waste. :)

Over the years I don't know how much strain I must have put on people's servers, at one point, that's before 2000, I was a teenager with a room full of PC and I was reinstalling linux distros on those machines like crazy, It's only fair that I give back a little bit of the bandwidth I now bought. It's also only fair that you would not believe me given this is the internet, ur not a cynic because of this :)

btw the niche I was referring to is the jewelry that my wife makes and the blog about mineralogy that I run, both are environments where affiliate marketing and good content and products could be monetized way better than how we do it today. Or so I was told, and by what I've read so far my advisors are probably right. Hosting my own websites is how I intend to start learning more about all this.

since we're talking tho, I'm curious and I think as providers you guys might teach me something.
I witnessed piracy going from something sold by sketchy people on the streets (pirated dvd, I remember that, those people were selling in front of the cinema in Italy during all the 90', u can still meet some today!) to P2P (I remember napster and I did downloaded Metallica's songs from there!) to megavideo (I was still a student and we did buy a premium account with my friends to watch and download stuff) and nowadays to what I believe are ads supported illegal streaming websites.

can you enlighten me about how do they make money under the hood and get away with it? I mean those ads must be paid by somebody, yet they're attached to clearly illegal content, how does that works?
