Looking to setup a private proxy

So Ive setup OVPN and PPTP so far but not a (private) proxy just yet. Looking for a solution I stumbled upon Squid but wondering if there is a better solution as the last squid tutorial I found on DO was for Ubuntu 12.xx :O

Any recommendations?

privoxy is much easier to install.
apt-get install privoxy

and then edit config.

So whenever I try to connect to my squid3 proxy using hidden-refuge setup script a pop-up appears when I use my browser which is requesting my proxy login details. That would be okay if it worked after but instead the pop-up keeps reoccuring even after I entered the correct details not letting me acctually use the internet. Any ideas?
