Dedicated Server for Large Storage
Hi Guys,
I am in need of a dedicated server with a large volume of local storage (SATA/SAS) which will be used for both development and archiving content. While I won't be storing a ton of data on the server itself, I need the RAW storage space to handle the archive projects I work on.
As many of you are aware I actively build Microsoft Windows templates allowing Windows to be run on platforms such as DigitalOcean, however as you may not be aware I also work on archiving content such as that of UCBerkeley which was removed from iTunes & YouTube.
The server will be used to create templates, download/upload content, archive and distribute content (Primarily via torrent, server would be running rtorrent/rutorrent).
The server will not be used to gather or distribute illegal content. DMCA or abuse complaints may be generated from to time when content is being scraped from sources like YouTube, however to date I have had zero complaints/issues.
So all that said, here is what I desire..
- Decent CPU (C2750+, the more power the better)
- 16GB+ RAM
- 12TB+ Usable Space (SW/HW RAID 0 is Fine, the more drives the better)
- 1Gbit/s Network Port
- US/Canada/Europe
I don't have a budget in mind, but since the majority of the work the server will be doing generates no real revenue I need to keep the cost as small as possible.
On the bandwidth front..Ideally it would come with 1Gbit unmetered, however I am not looking for a dedicated connection. I simply don't want to have to worry about my usage, especially when I begin seeding a torrent, such as the UCBerkeley course content I would like to release to the community (Reddit).
So...who want's to be my hero?

I have have good service from online.net - The storage range is better than OVH and the ISO's that my users download have gone unnoticed. So should be good for you.

Their storage range has been sold out for a couple months now and also a bit more than I am hoping to spend honestly.
Thanks though!
Budget? Or something close to how much you want to pay?!
As cheap as possible.
Hetzner i7-2600, 16GB Ram, 4x4TB - Unmetered inbound, 30TB out. € 51.26

Just filter by boxes with minimum 4 drives.
I actually already have one of their boxes and am looking to move away. The price is decent, but the network hasn't performed to my expectations..almost as if my server is getting throttled on a regular basis, especially on the inbound from YouTube.
When I was scraping the content from YouTube for the UCBerkeley courses I had to grab a server from Scaleway due the connection constantly being throttled...no similar issues with Scaleway at all...was a complete pain in the ass.
Thanks!
2 x Intel Xeon E5620 / 16 / 2x6TB (RAID 0 - 12 TB) / 1Gbit fully unlimited - 110 USD
Upload the course content to archive.org if they don't have it already. They'd be happy to host it and seed it.
FFFFFFFFFUCK
Now I'm fuming. What else got removed and why? Is Edx behind this jerk move or who? >:(
Umm ok?
It's being uploaded, but distributing it in its raw form is still something a lot of people desire.
My understanding is the doj is requiring it.
JFC. PC madness.
Is the IA distributing it in non-raw form somehow? What is missing?
UCBerkeley's statement:
http://news.berkeley.edu/2017/03/01/course-capture/
DOJ's letter about videos not having Closed Captions:
https://news.berkeley.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/2016-08-30-UC-Berkeley-LOF.pdf
Department of Justice said YouTube is not accessible enough for people with disabilities and Berkeley removed all courses from it.
WAT
This is the most ridiculous thing ever!
You can certainly upload the video, but you lose the auto generated sub-titles, metadata and other scraping which you can grab from YouTube using a tool such as youtube-dl.
Even so, having a hard copy of the content is preferred especially after the amount of time and effort going into it. I wouldn't want to upload it all to their archive only to see it go missing.
I'd upload the content provided with the videos in the event someone adds support. I haven't played with YT or IA video in ages, but pretty sure they used JWPlayer last I looked, and it's not impossible to render CC support for that.
Bump! I am still looking tor a server!
One more bump!
I'm sure you can upload that too, but maybe the IA could do something to make it easier.
Contact me. [email protected] or via skype quadranet.dustin -- we can work something out!
You can get 12TB in RAID-0 with wholesaleinternet for $80/mo
ReliableSite has an 8TB server for $80 a month and if you contact them through email I bet you could get their 16TB one for $100 a month.
Onlinet.net has available ST18 for 79.99 euro.
I added you.
Thanks!
Thanks!
If you can pop ~$500 all at once, you could get a 10tb Ironwolf drive from Newegg for $370 and park it in Delimiter Slot Hosting for $120 a year. Amortized over 3 years that ends up $2.23/TiB/month.
Also if you just want to archive the data and not actually access it much, Online.net C14 and OVH Cloud Archive are both 2 euro/TB/month, but they have upload and download fees of 10 euro/TB plus in the case of Online, another 10 euro/TB to erase data.
Unfortunately I am going to have to pass, I am not even a little willing to work with Delimiter.
Thanks though!
If possible make few torrents of those videos according to subjects. I will be happy to seed as long as I can. This move is insane !
Hmm, ok. @VaporNode has a similar slot hosting product but as of last year it was limited to drives 2TB and smaller. I wonder if they've fixed that by now.
@cociu also mentioned being willing to set up something like that a while back. I thought I had saved the link but I don't seem to have it. I'll look for it later.
if you pay quarently i can set this for you in 130 eur/mo :
2x E5-2430
32 gb ram
1gbps shared 30tb/mo transfer (i will not quote unmetered due of cost) you can choose from 4 different networks.
4x4tb hdd sata 3 (new ones)
1 ipv4
We are located in Romania , pm if you are interesed.
thanks for mention.
