Dedicated server for ESP

We're planning to start up a small time ESP, something on lines of mailchimp, campaignmonitor etc but on a smaller scale. We've been using Amazon SES, Mailgun to provide emails to our handful of clients. But as we're looking to scale, these options are not very viable and do not offer much control to restrict abusers. So, we've decided to use PowerMTA for the purpose and need a dedicated server for the same. PowerMTA has the ability to rotate IP addresses and restrict spam sending domains/IPs/clients.

So, what we need here is a Dedicated Server with

16GB RAM,
a modern Intel processor (E3/E5) and
SSD disks (or super-fast HDD),
good enough bandwidth for our mailing needs.

We'll also need IP addresses. The PowerMTA guys suggested 1 IP per 100,000 mails per hour. So, we'll need a little more than that to start with to be on the safer side and an option to always add more as required and as we gain some traction. There is no idea about budget so we'll take any offers, the best one with the prefect price ratio would be opted for. Thanks in advance.

  • I would suggest talk with providers like @qps @VortexMagnus @clouvider and more in a chat or sales email to have a good contact point other that support tickets they offer.

So in the stating phase if there is any hiccup they will give an hand than throw an wrench into the setup.

And i highly suggest you rent you IP's with an contract period of atleast 24 to 48 months so if you change your provider you very well may take your good or bad reputation (I hope you build your reputation soon)

for the MTA soft PowerMTA is solid choice until you learn more about exim in the longer run

    Thanked by 1Clouvider

1 per 100.000... And how many 100k's you got? How much storage? (raid?) How much is enough bandwith? ;)

See, nothing can be decided yet, we've currently got a few 100Ks but we're planning to scale so there's no limit to scaling.
1 TB of HDD storage would be enough. Smaller SSDs will do too.
No idea about bandwidth as it was all handled by SES and Mailgun.

How many IPs are you looking to lease? Considering that this will be a legitimate mailing, I assume you would not need a lot?

  • @AlexBarakov said:

Well, it'll be 100% legitimate from our side, but unfortunately same can't be said for the clients that come on board. We know that a portion of new clients would be spammers. We'll put measures to keep them at bay but this is something that can't be completely avoided. As for the IP address, it'll need some internal discussion. if the providers can come up with some sort of pricing per IP, that'll be great.

  • If Netherlands is okay, we can do the following dedicated servers for you:

    Intel Xeon E3-1230 v5
    16 GB DDR4
1x1 TB HDD or 120 GB SSD
    8 IPv4 addresses, /64 IPv6
    10 TB @ 1Gbps
    Rotterdam, Netherlands

    Price: 65 EUR per month

    or

    Intel Xeon E3-1230
    16 GB DDR3
1x1 TB HDD or 120 GB SSD
    8 IPv4 addresses, /64 IPv6
    10 TB @ 1Gbps
    Rotterdam, Netherlands

    Price: 60 EUR per month

You can adjust specs to your requirements or add more IPs later; you may drop us a PM if interested and we can discuss further details.

@gurugrv What kind of mailing is this? How many complaints are you seeing?

  • @Verelox said:

Thanks for the offer, will pm and discuss.

  • @qps said:

We provide service like mailchimp but to a very small group and at a pretty low price. Complaints are from 0.75% to 2% per campaign sent by our users.

    Thanks for recommending @simonindia

@gurugrv what sort of volume would we be talking about, and how would you ensure this server is not used for spam ?

  • @Clouvider said:

The volume will be pretty low to start with. I would guess 2M emails a month after we've promoted the hell out of our services. As for spam, the IP reputation will matter a lot to us. As we will be service providers, we won't be sending any emails ourselves, our users would.
We cannot let it be abused as our paid customers will have to suffer with a bad inbox rate which we do not want.

Do you have a vetting process for your Clients? How does one become Client for this service ?

  • We're currently catering to local clients but our web portal is almost done, so we'll start promoting it online asap. Our local needs are fulfilled easily by SES but once we're fully online we'll need our own mailing server.
