Just going to link the HN article.. this is interesting should give more exposure to .io sites on google search results..

There are still quite a few 3 letter .io domains available:

Expensive domain though.. $40 on gandi.net might be the cheapest..

  • I saw this article as well and thought it was pretty interesting. I know some people were calling for Google to make this change in labeling .io as gccTLD. Though let's remember that Google doesn't have the official say. Meaning this isn't an Internet wide change, just how Google will handle the TLD within their search engine.

Yeah, it's a bummer. Does anyone know of other place where it might be cheaper to register?

Very nice, I wonder how many people saw a boost in their rankings after this change?

I just registered sqz.io and set up http://sqz.io - a pretty neat and simple to use URL shortener. And anyone who signs up for an account (no personal information required) can keep track of their shortened URLs, see statistics and so on. I think that .io is mostly for geeks, like us ;-)

Wow, did you just do this in the time since I posted this thread? :) very nice..

  • @marcm I'd like to see sqz.io in spanish, If you want I can help you to translate it.

  • marcmmarcm Member

@DestroyeRCo - Absolutely. The isn't much text, and if you send me the translation to marcm_at_phoenixvps.com I'll implement it. For short text and menu items please include both the English and the Spanish versions. For the API page just include the Spanish page. I will also post your name if you want credit for the translation on sqz.io. Thank you ;-)

@marcm did you build that yourself or is it based off of another script? I was looking before for a functional URL shortener for my own personal use, but wasn't been able to come up with one.

@user123 - I didn't build it myself. There is no point in reinventing the wheel.

These are 3 excellent choices, I have all three of them and one of them is used on http://sqz.io:

@Voss said: I was under the impression that you were pushing this URL shortener down our throats for days so it isn't 'just registered' or am I mistaken?

this. I reported it several times, but it looks like he's getting away with this

Would you mind explaining why you are using Javascript to redirect users, rather than using a 301 or similar redirect code?

Aside from that, URL shorteners are evil.

I think it is pretty easy to use a custom domain url shortening using bitly
