Just saw this on WHT - http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1262337

Not < $7/month but it's quite rare location.

They posted to LET with a coupon to bring it to below $7 http://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/3498/r0ute.com-iranian-kvm-solusvm-384mb-ram-starting-6.99/p1
However the coupon doesn't seem to work anymore.

As far as i know r0ute.com is the only vps hoster that host servers in iran. Why not asking them for a favor ?

PS: There are other hosts on www.exoticvps.com however i do not know if they host in iran.

This is exactly r0ute.com offer. I don't personally need a VPS in Iran but found the offer interesting anyway.

@Liam said: Yeah, we were considering advertising r0ute on LEB but as we are hosted in the USA, it wasn't quite clear if it would break some law.

I believe so. Can't do business with Iran if I recall correctly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctions_against_Iran *

*Just woke up so didn't actually read the Wiki article. But I'm sure it mentions something about it.

@Liam said: Yeah, we were considering advertising r0ute on LEB but as we are hosted in the USA, it wasn't quite clear if it would break some law.

They have a ps for WHT administrators maybe applicable to LEB also..

(For WHT administrators and concerned: US sanctions against Iran apply only to certain technology, goods, and companies. We are not violating US or international law, see Wikipedia articles on Sanctions against Iran & U.S. sanctions against Iran.)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctions_against_Iran
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._sanctions_against_Iran

  • In December 2010 it was reported that the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control had approved nearly 10,000 exceptions to U.S. sanctions rules worldwide over the preceding decade by issuing special licenses for American companies.[29]

  • Meh, Colocrossing doesn't seem to be impacted by the embargo: http://pastebin.com/c3rg3298 and does business with Iran anyway.

Personally I do not 'support' the embargo, I believe in free trade with everyone, but it's still not something I would risk and if approached with an opportunity to do business would kindly decline it.

@rds100 I have a VPS in Iran with these guys: http://www.irandatacenter.ir/
Fits right in the LEB range with 7 bucks/month. Problem is that bandwidth is expensive in Iran.
Uptime is piss poor though. Down at least once a day for 30 mins. Not renewing ofcourse.

I found this on the Wikipedia article. Not sure if it applies or is of any specific relevance.

Over the past years, the US Department of State has poured millions into exporting internet freedom in the form of circumvention technologies, trainings and other aid.[93] But Internet users in sanctioned countries have long complained about the effects of export controls, the result of which is often the wholesale blocking of communications technologies and bans from web hosting, among other things.[93]

  • It seems the link in the OP no longer works...did WHT pull it?

  • edited May 2013

It was not allowed to be posted there.

US sanctions still apply, even if Wikipedia doesn't agree.

Does it come with its own nuclear backup power generator?

Nope, but it can be added later as an addon ;-)

I wouldn't host anything in Iran. I don't want some Mullah going through my server looking for offensive material.

But it's ok when some Joe do this, correct? :) Big difference!

Why would it be OK for anyone to go through my data?

@wilbo said: Why would it be OK for anyone to go through my data?

Then why did you specifically mention Mullah, as though if it wasn't Mullah, it'd be all fine for them to look through your data? In Iran your host may snoop on you to ensure you don't insult Quran, but in the west your host may snoop on you to ensure you don't violate DMCA. Is there a big difference to you, really.

  • wilbowilbo Member

In the West they are snooping illegally, where in Iran they are doing it as a matter of course.

    DMCA =/= Any Religious Law...........

    ;)

Have Chief reach into the cash stockpiles and throw money at US officials. That's how the US government works.
