Yea, good luck if you are starting now. Its just not worh the hassle. If you dont trust small providers with relay you have amazon.

mailcow + Amazon SES (production approved) as the SMTP relay or another SMTP relay. This is what i did before mxroute. Before that, mailinabox with SMTP relay. BUT I think mailcow is awesome.

For outbound emails you can use amazon ses
