I get the whole use a merchant account/direct processing of cards/ stripe etc etc, none of those truly replace the advantages of paypal.

PayPal, Visa and MasterCard require, in their merchant agreements, that the price be the same for all payment methods. (There are some exceptions for government agencies and maybe in some countries.)

I always see people posting here that 2% or even apparently 1% is a high fee but no one ever seems to actually post what companies (merchant accounts) have these low fee's.
