I am not surprised honestly. netdynamics was another surprise over the years with different hosts. They store passwords in plain text.

tbf, if u using vps,keeping ur root password doesn't prevent the host from peeking at ur data if they really wanted to. since they control the hypervisor, they can just mount ur disk image or boot int
