but Linode could always refer them to Mxroute. Is it usual for legitimate VPS users to want to send direct email (or any email) from the VPS at all? Obviously some do, but I wonder the percentage.

If it's just a few emails why don't you use a regular vps and send email thru mxroute?

@jarland mxroute could also work out quite cheap, he had offer for around 10 bucks per year, using mailchannels for outbound mail.

I suggest just getting one of the discounted mxroute plans. It's ridiculously affordable and while not exactly slick, it does almost everything one could reasonably expect.
