Developing a good email hosting service is very costly, so there are no "hidden" or "unknown" alternatives.

Most small email hosting providers use the single server setup I am describing, MXroute included. They use what would equate to a single-server setup for hosting the emails.

The incident you are describing of the server dying and being on the other side of the world is one of the issues with self-hosting. One needs to be always available to fix issues, which is not viable

The email hosting industry is small. There are not many alternatives serving the same market as MXroute.
