They are very cheap provider ... I have my main services with Linode and Contabo which both are excellent ... This was a $18/yr (then upgraded to $45/yr) VPS which I thought would "just work&

Try Linode, very stable.

If the linode credit can be transferred, I can accept that as payment.

Probably the best option is to wait until you're actually in New Zealand, then try all of Linode's speed tests (https://www.linode.com/speedtest) on your internet connection.

I can only use the locations which Linode offers.

I want to use my existing Linode credits (Image)

Linode (aff link) has a Mumbai location and I have tested it. Latency is nice. Mostly in single-digit ms..

Linode, Tokyo, Japan : 0 B/s | N/A | ping error!

I still have $15 unused credits in Linode. Don't know what good things to do with it for 3 months.

I believe your first route commands are along the same as the Linode thread that jvnadr tried and had issues (curious as to what issues, as I think this IS the best solution).

Linode thread's solution is having issues, as many commercial openvpn solutions will delete routing and I still had issues when tried to use a more complicated syntax.

You definitely want Singapore, only Linode, DO and AWS are available in India. SG has OVH, LeaseWeb(?) etc. at least.
