Another guest-to-host escape: "Pwnscape" (CVE-2026-99999, CVSS 9.3)

forestforest Member
edited October 16 in Security

By passing a malformed packet up VirtIO to the checksum offloader in the host kernel, a guest can achieve arbitrary code execution in the host by corrupting the network header. Virtually all KVM providers are affected.

All affected providers should upgrade as soon as possible.

Description
===========

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ipv4: validate checksum_start before completing checksum

If a packet with bad checksum metadata gets into the ipv4 stack,
skb_checksum_help can corrupt the network header and cause a bunch of
mischief.

This was discovered and reported by Paulos, and has been reporoduced
by others independently since.

We really shouldn't allow such packets in, but as a defence
in depth measure, let's also check before we complete the checksum.

A more complete validation at input is forthcoming, but needs more work.

The Linux kernel CVE team has assigned CVE-2026-99999 to this issue.

Mitigation
==========

The Linux kernel CVE team recommends that you update to the latest
stable kernel version for this, and many other bugfixes. Individual
changes are never tested alone, but rather are part of a larger kernel
release. Cherry-picking individual commits is not recommended or
supported by the Linux kernel community at all. If however, updating to
the latest release is impossible, the individual changes to resolve this
issue can be found at these commits:

As of this comment, all Debian kernels are vulnerable.

Switching all VMs to use e1000 would probably mitigate the issue, but would come with a massive performance hit in the form of high CPU overhead for networking and would require a reboot of all guests.

Maybe adding csum=off,guest_csum=off to the QEMU virtio-net-pci device would mitigate it? But I don't know if that actually prevents a checksummed packet with NEEDS_CSUM from being processed by the vulnerable vNIC checksum offload code or if it just hides that capability from a well-behaved guest.

Probably not too difficult to write a livepatch for this particular vuln, actually.

A reboot is still better though, since it'll be fixing the hundreds of other (albeit less severe) bugs that have surely accumulated.

And as annoying as these are, it's not like it didn't exist before its discovery. It was always there.

We have already upgraded most of the fleet following the last few vulnerabilities. But we managed to do it without reboot.

This time though it won't be possible, not enough spare room on most clusters.

It seems there is already a kernel fix available so no need for patching.

guess all my vps will have some fun, thank god im using emulated devices on my other crap. e1000 for the rescue xD

  • @NovaCloudHosting seems to have already fixed it but my vps cannot boot so created a ticket. Email:

    Dear Customer,

To address CVE-2026-99999, we have scheduled emergency maintenance on selected hypervisor and game server nodes in both of our locations at short notice.

    Scheduled time: 15 October 2026, 22:45 (UTC+2)

    Expected impact:
Affected services may experience a short downtime due to host reboots. The following services may be affected:

    Standard VPS (NL + de)
    Premium VPS (NL only)
    High-End VPS (NL only)
    Storage VPS
    Storage-Box
    Game-Servers
    Webspaces
    Discord Bot instances

The estimated outage per affected VPS is approximately 10–15 minutes within the maintenance window.
No action is required on your side.

We understand that short-notice maintenance can be inconvenient and sincerely appreciate your understanding as we carry out this work to ensure the continued security and stability of our infrastructure.

doing a reboot feels like isn't a strong point for them. i have one vps in NL and i think this is already the 3rd time novacloudhosting had a botched reboot. if it's night time in my timezone then had to wait until next morning, manually start it, if lucky it can start again.

i know proxmox can behave funny sometimes with certain storage, but if it's just a reboot why not sit and wait a bit and see if there's still clients vps having failed reboot? that's like basic todo list when you have to do update & reboot on production servers.

edit: also just noticed apparently my ssh host key has been changed, that is very weird

Turns out it was because some Debian kernel versions were incompatible with a specific virtualization setting on their side. Fixed now tho

    No IPv4 header, no vulnerability.

    Nope. Just this:

    Hi,

This was caused because your OS loaded a new Kernel version, since the VPS was rebooted. This is just an incompatibility between some Debian Kernel versions and a specific virtualization setting on our side. No worries, I have changed the setting and your VPS is now up and running again!

Please let me know in case you experience any other issues.

If im not mistaken I installed the backport kernel before the maintenance (6.12 something)
