Looking for Europe colocation with metered, low cost electricity

hey folks,

I am looking to colocate around 13U of servers/switch, some of which have GPUs inside, though they don't run 100% of the time. electricity price at home is excessive.
The best solution, but we can look at other options, would be something like this:

  • 13U+ Must be able to host servers at 87cm post-to-post. (If it really changes things we can probably make it become 12U)
  • 4x16A or 2x32A circuit (to be used 80%) with metered / switched per-socket (I can provide PDUs if necessary). The maximum consumption which you will not often see is 8kW.
  • 3 kW always on plus a metered option for extra or average consumption. For average i think we should calculate 5 kW. For metered, anything above 0.26eur /kwh (PUE included) is disqualifying. We are probably looking at France or Nordics i guess.
  • OOB access for IPMI
  • 10 Gb link with 25TB or 1G link.
  • 8 IPs

If anybody is willing to, I'd be happy to discuss.
I have some options which are very doable price wise for this in the US but I am just a bit worried tomorrow Trump siezes everything or ceases trade with my country (Switzerland), lol.

    You do not have a chance for 0.26EUR per kwh in Europe currently, unless you look at Nordic countries, but I am hearing some change of market there as well. Home power is usually cheaper than datacenters.

    I could probably do more fixed + metered overusage, however not at 0.26EUR per kwh.

    PS. I think you had a ticket with us, responded back with some additional options.

    two factors will give you a hard time:

    • if your servers are of 87cm length you might not even fit in a 100cm rack, so you will need a colocationpartner who can provide 120cm deepth racks

    • 12-13U ~ 1/4 - 1/3 of a rack @ up to 8kw? -- So the rack / datacenter must be able to cool a 20-30kw rack? reliable?

    This 2 factor's are actually disqualifying the 26 cent. Even for the USA finding a rack that can cool up to 30kw power is at this pricing not too much easy, while with the new political reality the USA might anyway be disqualified even they would give it for free.

    Your post sounds like you have already offers >26 cent /khw -- where ever that might be, please ensure that they can really cool this amount of heat in a single rack. Talk is cheap... until your GPU's are crashing.

    My colo provider here in Sweden wanted €0.36/kWh excl. VAT 🙃

    Even if you find bellow 0,30€/kwh, are you going to cancel on next increase coming years, having no other options?

    Colocation probably is only worth it for datacenters if customers are long term, especially when making low prices.

    I also see more and more providers not wanting to do less then one Rack. Worldstream is a good example. They stopped doing Colocation offers for anything smaller in recent years

    Part of the discussion needs to be around stability of prices and source of electricity for sure. In France for example electricity price is very stable due to nuclear. But I am looking for something I can keep for at least 2 years.

    100cm should be ok.

    There are data centers for sure that are equipped for this, for sure.
    I see probably two possibilities: either i am the outlier -> the rest of the racks are using less and this is not a major problem, or the facility is used to do high density colo.

    There's also the possibility to take a full rack just for this. Bit of a waste of space, but let's see.

    We have electricity at 0.25 EUR + VAT, with cooling included in that price.

    It might be possible with a full rack, but I'm not sure we can provide that much electricity. I need to discuss it with our team if you are interested.

    We have our own solar plants, but even that does not help to provide much better prices.

    Depending on your longer term scale for additional space + power - we have a few different options that could work!

    We have our own data center with solar energy in Romania with 400kw storage batteries, we inject 60% of the generated energy into the national system, to feed it back later when we don't have enough solar energy, that's why currently and in the near future we will not depend on the national price per kw, we produce the energy ourselves, we are constantly expanding with the creation of new spaces for our solar panels, so we can negotiate quite a lot for colocation ;)

    Hi,

    well that depends on the datacenter. If they like BBQ.

    Normal datacenters, the old ones -- thats the majority of what is out there for normal colocation providers like us, are build for 0.5 kw/sqm - 1.5 kw/sqm cooling.

    If you have a rack of 60x100 you will have ~ 2 sqm ( the space to let the doors open, and even more space in front to actually rack a server with 90 cm deepth ).

    So thats for the normal old datacenters 1kw cooling included in the rack and for the better older datacenters 3kw cooling.

    Thats why most datacenters around the world include by default ~ 2kw cooling in their rack prices ( thats where the scale/ramp usually starts ).

    Because of some modernizations ( having installed cool side / hot side separation/aisle ) there is some mathematical optimization to actually bring the coolness where its really needed in the front. With this you will be able to maybe double the potential cooling effect.

    So you will be maybe around 4-6kw maybe. And thats also where usually the upper scale of standard pricelists for "normal" colocation in datacenter ends.

    Everything above that will raise your inlet temperature of your servers and you will be forced to rack the servers with space inbetween so you will let 1-2U free to have an air buffer, so at least server A does not influence the heat of server B too much.

    This you can play up until maybe 8kw if you like it HOT and crispy and are a friend of the yolo's.

    After that, either you have some additional cooling at the rack or you switch to water/fluid cooling or the datacenter is much much much newer that will give a higher cooling / sqm ratio and will naturally blow the s*** out of your servers and burst the cool air inside.

    Because all you can do is actually bring more air / hour inside. You can not just lower the temperature because of condensation. You can also not endless lower the humidity to be able to lower the temperature before condensation comes. Especially this kind of stuff cost a lot of money and make other solutions more cost effective.


    So yes, the colocation, as requested by the topic opener, will just not happen like that with 26 cent / kwh power ( or any other $$$ compensation for this all heat ).

    I never saw a rack that can run stable >10kw without some additional tricks. You just dont get the heat our of the servers fast enough to make them run stable at full load, except you have a very special setup, like you are running this all power with 2 mio. ultra low TDP CPU's that do not even need active cooling under normal conditions and have a high resilience for heat so you could install active cooling and. Maybe something like raspberry Pi / other ARM based CPUs / something like that i never saw in real life. But with that i could imagine it will work without extra cooling.

    This is not true. We have at SkyLink running racks full of bladecenter with around 30KW electricity usage in total per rack. It just depends on the airflow and the inlet air temperature. We run the cold aisle at around 25 degrees.
