Can IRC act as a simple minimalist open source Discord alternative?

some of you need to go back and read the original essay because while what you're saying is keen it's just not relevant to what the op is asking.

Discord feels like it runs IRC servers on the backend, highly customized probably, but IRC servers regardless.

At the very least, Discord is heavily inspired by IRC. Not the other way around.

I really wish I had a "...what?" button next to my "Thanks" button sometimes.

Discord feels like it runs a IRC server beneath, it even is called a "Discord Server" -- you have channels, nicks etc. and similar text output style etc. just with fancier interface.

If you are an IRC old timer, the correlatiosn are plain and completely f'ng obvious. You just get your own server instead of just an channel.

Inspired by, sure. It even secretly supports sed (s/old/new), which is probably a direct nod to IRC.
But you also said "not the other way around", which, yea? I'd say that's "completely f'ing obvious" because one predates the other by 2+ decades...

But the scale is completely different, none of it is going to be IRC underneath.
All chat applications will have similarities because at their core they are going to be very simple, lmao.

And the servers are technically called guilds, but that name never stuck around. You'll still encounter it in the API documentation though.
The distinction is generally harmless, since you can't selfhost Discord.

I think it was the OP who made the impression IRC is inspired by Discord. Also i think first version of IRC are 3+ decades now.

Regardless, Discord is SPOF unlike IRC.

Discord servers are the SPOF, so it doesn't scale anywhere near like IRC does. IRC was first scaling "masterpieces". IRC is not a single server SPOF out there. You have a lot of servers, they were called networks etc. like IRCnet, DALnet etc.

I dislike heavily that everything is on Discord, instead that there was simply better IRC clients built. Dependant on a 3rd party platform instead of self-hosted. But you got to go where the people are, and hence we too have a Discord "server". Since it's a platfrom, they could de-platform you at any moment.

They called IRC the "daddy that started it all", so definitely not the OP. Might've been someone else?

That... depends on what you mean by that. Do you mean that it's centralized? If so, yes.

I'm not sure about that, but it's a difficult comparison to draw anyway since Discord just does a lot more. Whether you need any of that, is a personal matter.

Yep, not a fan either. Tired of being farmed for data and being at the mercy of automated moderation systems.

I could live without many of the Discord niceties tbh, but many of my friends couldn't. The only chance at migrating away from it, is going to be a proper alternative. IRC just isn't that, no matter how many QoL things you tack on.

Discord and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

Same - still on both

The great old times. That was probably around the first times i visited IRC.

Funny how this too began from Finland

i dunno irc has it's hard negatives too. look at efnet where the opers were worse than the fuckin packet kids. the ones that weren't packet kids anyway.

and saying no spof with irc is nonsense. all networks don't interconnect, and it's hard to imagine op would be standing up a network anyway. more likely he'd be standing up a single ergo instance or something.

Oh, there are definitely some bad apples here and there

Even today, not all opers and admins get along well.

    True.

Some servers don't even pass the trial link stage, due to DDoS attacks of course, and they either end up dead or withdrawing their application.

I think The Lounge uses bouncers so you don't have to worry about that. It pretty much modernizes IRC.

Not following, how do bouncers relate to being able to see previous post history?

That's what a bouncer does. It stays perpetually connected so that, when you connect to the bouncer, your client is automatically given a copy of the room history and any messages that were received while you were gone.

BNCs and clients such as The Lounge, IRCCloud, and ZNC, can log and preserve chat history.

Ok, very counterintuitive name then. :)

How does one 'feel' that Discord is running IRC on backend? Some kind of spidey sense only neckbeards possess? :)

Why you don't like Discord, guys?

    Discord went downhill since 2016/2017

I never liked it because it is geared for kid gamers that like minecraft and the UI reflects it. Always seemed stupid adults using this baby looking thing.

Cheeky bugger don't blame me for that. :kissing_closed_eyes: I said I hate the ubiquity of discord and want to use other services. That is the only reason I brought it up.

I hate Discord with a passion. The only thing that's worse is Teams. God, I have PTSD over the Teams sounds.

But I understand why Discord is popular: no need to host an actual server. A group of gamers or friends who don't know shit about Linux, can't afford a VPN VPS or are behind CGNAT can sign up and have a chatroom.

In reality, we need open protocols not closed platforms. We need protocols which DGAF which client you run. We need to unbundle the server and client side.

Mastodon and Bluesky while imperfect do a good job at a protocol rather than a platform. I in fact host both Fediverse and ATProto servers for myself.

While protocols can be ugly, we should make them modular so they can expand over time. After all, nobody asks for your "gmail" they ask for your email. ActivityPub started as a Twitter wannabe but expanded to copying Instagram and TikTok too.

    EDIT: Add another paragraph.

    • But the biggest problem with IRC is that it doesn't support going offline, or intermittent connectivity on a mobile phone. You can see this as gatekeeping - you need a desktop with stable internet which can be a good or bad requirement. In LET's case probably good.

This is something a BNC handles since it's running on a server/VPS (make sure the provider allows IRC). A regular BNC is more work but thelounge is actually awesome for this as it handles any client you can use a browser with perfectly (at least running it in private mode). Regarding nickserver, the signup/verify is more than average folks are used to (since it's commands) but you can easily tell your client or thelounge your username and pass for the connection and have it signin for you once you've completed it.

This is an XKCD geology moment. The average user isn't doing all that. They're certainly not learning Linux and buying a server, nor are they getting a third-party service provider involved or paying money. What you described is way too difficult.

LET users, on the other hand, do have servers and know Linux. That's why it may work for LET.

Oh yeah, if I didn't create accounts for a few friends on my thelounge instance, there's no way they would have figured it. Well, one of them could have if they wanted... Though they used mIRC back in the 90s/00s so that is why I didn't have to make them a step-by-step document or set the network block in their user.json file, they were able to figure things out in the web interface on their own.

IIRC, op said in the original post they would buy a domain/server/etc so there could be something simple for the folks in that community which can easily be done with thelounge. If it was me though, I would also host my own ircd so users wouldn't interact with servers not controlled by me/the community. I say that because I could totally see there being a troll and making an opper on some other server mad (whether they're a good one or one of the drama oppers that seem to plague a lot of networks) and end up getting the server k/g lined from it.
