NOCIX cancelled my 4-year-old server and refused even a 24–48 hour recovery window for ~1.5TB data

NOCIX cancelled my 4-year-old server and refused even a 24–48 hour recovery window for ~1.5TB of data

I am posting this as a warning to other NOCIX customers, especially anyone storing important or long-term data on their servers.

This is what happened.

I had been using a NOCIX server for approximately four years. One of my VMs alone contained approximately 1.5TB of data across multiple virtual disks.

When it became time to renew the server, I encountered problems completing the payment. I had funds available and tried different payment methods, but I was unable to successfully complete the renewal.

Importantly, I did not simply wait until the server disappeared.

On August 7, 2026, I contacted NOCIX and explicitly explained the situation. I asked whether they could temporarily restore network access for 24–48 hours so that I could back up the data accumulated over the previous years.

I specifically explained that one VM contained approximately 1.5TB across multiple disks and that a complete backup might take more than 24 hours depending on the actual transfer speed.

I also provided links to several previous support tickets showing that I had already been trying to resolve the issue.

Despite this, the service was cancelled on August 8, 2026 for an overdue invoice.

I then tried to find alternative solutions

I asked whether another person could create a new NOCIX account and whether my existing server could be transferred to that account.

NOCIX support initially stated:

“Both clients need to be online with no open abuse incidents for 30 days for us to review a transfer request.”

I then asked whether the service could be transferred to a new account through mutual verification.

The response was:

“We cannot transfer a service to a new account.”

At that point, I again asked NOCIX to at least restore the server temporarily so I could retrieve my own data.

The final request

On August 10, I made the request as simple as possible:

Please keep the server online for 24 hours so I can complete my backup.

I was not asking for permanent free service.

I was not asking NOCIX to continue providing the server indefinitely.

I was asking for a short recovery period to retrieve approximately 1.5TB of my own data.

NOCIX support responded:

“The server was cancelled for non payment we cannot recover it.”

I asked again for the matter to be escalated to someone who could make an exception and explained that simply keeping the server powered on and connected to the network for 24 hours would allow me to complete the recovery.

The final response was:

“The server is cancelled, we cannot put the server back online.”

Why I am sharing this

I understand that a hosting provider has the right to enforce its payment and cancellation policies.

However, what concerns me is the absence of any practical recovery mechanism.

In my case:

  • The server had been in use for approximately four years.
  • One VM contained approximately 1.5TB across multiple virtual disks.
  • I attempted multiple payment methods.
  • I contacted NOCIX before and after the cancellation.
  • I submitted multiple support tickets.
  • I asked for the data to be retained.
  • I requested a temporary 24–48 hour recovery window before cancellation.
  • I explored transferring the service to another account.
  • After cancellation, I reduced my request to only 24 hours of temporary access.
  • I repeatedly asked support to escalate the matter to someone with decision-making authority.
  • The request was ultimately refused.

The billing records shown to me by support listed two declined $180 PayPal billing attempts on August 2. I had also been attempting other payment methods, but those attempts did not appear in the billing records shown by support.

I have preserved the relevant support-ticket history, including the complete exchange, as an MHTML archive.

The lesson I want other customers to take away

If you have important data on a NOCIX server, maintain an independent backup somewhere else.

Do not assume that a billing problem will result in a reasonable recovery period.

Do not assume that a cancelled server can be temporarily restored.

And if you have hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes of data, do not wait until the renewal problem occurs before beginning your migration.

I am posting the details so that other customers can make an informed decision about whether this risk is acceptable to them.

I am not asking readers to blindly take my side. I have preserved the support records and the relevant messages so that the facts can be independently evaluated.

So you did not have backups of the "critical" data... OK.

Doesn't matter whether renewal extension is possible or not, this seems to be a customer problem and no one else. From customer side I understand an extra 24 hours should not matter to the company and totally feel the hurt you're going .

What if the hardware malfunctioned? What would your strategy be at that point?

I feel you should really evaluate what priorities are for you and your customers.

    Sorry this happened.
    (But its your problem)

    Good luck.

Your server failed to renew correctly on August 2nd and you only reached out to Nocix on August 7th... If there were billing issues, there were exactly 5 days for you to reach out to support and either report these issues, or execute any backups.

Billing problems happen but it's important that everyone acts swiftly when these appear. Apparently there wasn't a problem with NOCIX ticket answering times once you did one. That alone tells me you could've probably got luckier if you acted immediately once you got PayPal's e-mails and Nocix's e-mails.

It actually surprises me that Nocix took 6 days to actually end the server. I thought we were one of the few companies doing 7 days for that, didn't know Nocix did it as well. Nice!

    important

Obviously wasn't that important if you lost the data with just one server...

  • Critical data on the cheapest of the cheapest dedicated providers with no backups. :D

To some extent, it is also your responsibility for having neglected your server for quite some time.

  • If you have truly been paying $180/month for 4 years, it would seem to me like its a bad move on their part to suspend and cancel your server so quickly.

Welcome to the club, I only keep one single copy of every piece of data as I don't believe in backups either, because

Backups are Evil. The fewer backups you have the safer your data is.

Ideally everyone should strive to have ZERO backups because backups increase the surface area for attack and with each backup comes an additional entry point to data.

The provider has full responsibility to keep data safe and when data loss occurs you are are fully entitled to blame the provider and say to them "IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT"

    and

"Let my loss weight on your conscience!"

People here care too much about backups, THEY ARE WRONG!!!

Sorry you lost your data and it is quiet bad reading about something like this happen.

On the other side, we are a customer of Nocix on Colo. Had a similar issue where a large payment did not go through PayPal, and we were delayed, but NOCIX staff was very understanding and provided options to solve it.

As much as I have empathy for your situation, please understand that there are human costs on dealing with long and similar issues from the provider itself.

  • How does this slop keep ending up as a "Review"?
Review your own backup strategy when you rent a cheap dedi.
1.5TB of critical data and not even the understanding of a simple 3-2-1 backup strategy? What if that disk was to fail? What if it becomes compromised? What if the host decided you violated their TOS and terminated you? Will it be the same woe is me sob story? It's your data, if you value it you protect it.

Your neglegence is not a review for anyone else. Your "lesson" is elementary. Back your stuff up, pay your bills.

In OP's defense, 1.5 TB of data is a lot to back up regularly if it's frequently changing and he's on a budget. Even if he's on weekly incremental backups, a week's worth of lost changes can be crippling.

Still shows a lack of disaster plan though, but it's not necessarily quite as catastrophically negligent as it's made out to be.

    OVH's object s3 storage is 7.2 eur a month for 1 TB.
Setting up a Rsync backup task to do incremental back ups and changes costs you about 30 minutes.

Like I said, it shows a lack of a disaster plan. But I can also see how someone who is new to this would think that weekly backups would be enough, until shit hits the fan and they realize that rolling things back a week is a lot worse than they thought it would be. That's short-sighted, but not quite as negligent as simply backing nothing up.

  • Ban OP for the intentionally misleading title.

OP should have made a PSA post to backing up data and to check on payment confirmation.

  • This is funny to read

  • This thread made my Tuesday morning.

  • We're sorry to hear this but the 1.5TB of data is not so important appearly.

you already said past 4 years, hence when sudden payment cannot go through, alarms should be ringing. just 1-2 days bef official cancel date, if all else fails, natural reaction is to pull a backup asap just incase provider is someone who abide by rules strictly on dates. dont assume your good 4 years means anything to the provider.

Payment is client problem to solve in time. No solution - go away, there is a line of new clients.

    Welcome to 2026.

On the billing side, what should the OP have done differently? Should he has opened a ticket immediately when the payment failed, rather than wasting days testing other payment methods?
Also, instead of asking for free access, wouldn't offering a pro-rated payment for a few days have actually worked?

  • I went through a similar thing with Nocix Cancelled server after their payment gateways magically stopped working for me (I instantly opened a ticket about the failure). Luckily I Keep regular backups offsite and was able to keep my production services online with a mild maintenance period.

Nocix is since on my Do not use list as they only fixed the payment gateway issues after the server was in the dreaded cancelled state and "Unrecoverable".

    Yes, obviously.

rather than wasting days testing other payment methods?

Days? I got like 8 credit cards or payment methods. That would take minutes to test.

He tried them, he said none of them worked.

Also, instead of asking for free access, wouldn't offering a pro-rated payment for a few days have actually worked?

You missed the part where he had the money but couldn't pay. How is creating a second non-payable invoice for pennies help the provider or customer? Sending a ticket that said "I tried 5 credit cards and none work but I can confirm they have available credit and able to make purchases elsewhere".

They have a system designed to work a certain way. Support is minimum wage paid and trained to do certain things. Hacking shit is not worth it.

  • Doesn’t Nocix have reps here? Tag them

  • Is NOCIX holding the OPs data ransom to extort processing fees for bounced payments?
