Hello, I’m looking for a reliable dedicated server with strong L4 DDoS protection for reverse proxy usage.

My budget is around 200–340€ per month. The server will mainly be used as a reverse proxy, so stable DDoS mitigation is very important. I’m looking for protection comparable to networks using Smartnet, Voxility, or similar solutions.

A 10G port is the minimum requirement, while 2x10G would be preferred if available. I’m mainly looking for strong L4 TCP DDoS mitigation/filtering, especially for ports 80/443.

Datapacket is currently outside my budget, so I’m looking for alternative providers in Europe. A Netherlands location would be preferred, but I’m open to other European locations if the network quality and protection are suitable.

If you have any offers or recommendations, please let me know. Thank you!

Your offer seems quite okay but i dont feel like supporting CP hosters

He pulled it out of his ass to defame alexhost, and/or thinks that equally-defamatory rumors count as evidence. Any privacy-first service will attract some bad actors, but they obviously don't allow it and will act on it when the law demands. A host of this size and price range is not going to be genuinely bulletproof, certainly not enough to host something that illegal.

Throwing around casual accusations of extremely illegal activities without evidence beyond "other people said so, trust me" is disgusting. Pretty sure it can also get you warned or banned here.

It's not the first time. Remember
    https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/213009/crunchbits-does-not-respond-to-csam-abuse/p1 ?

Yep. Lots of people like throwing around these accusations thinking that no one will question them. As Crunchbits said:

@crunchbits said: If we disabled infrastructure every time someone sent an email alleging CSAM without any verifiable detail or law-enforcement validation, we would effectively become a turnkey Layer-7 DoS service. This exact tactic has been abused for years.

My guess is all the "evidence" in the accusation against alexhost is equally shallow (e.g. their lack of action being taken when a unverifiable report is sent their way).

Yes - and I don't take down any of that stuff.
It gets a lot of people mad, but I just tell them that it is what it is and to fuck off if they're asking me to take down stuff that isn't CSAM.

In all seriousness though, the planning could have been done better because as far as I understand this is the kind of risk you need to take into consideration when launching VPS in the lowend market. It will attract the wrong audience and affected the other good ones.

You don't have to continue selling at the current price if it shows that more abusers will come, the current good users can remain and suddenly you have a list of loyal customer base.

Again I am still very surprised because quite a few providers that I communicated with so far mention that most users still behaves reasonably well despite the low price that they offer. I am still very curious about the number or percentage of "troublesome users" if you don't mind sharing with me privately.

I don't think the decision will be reversed and no hard feeling but I just feel a bit disappointed on how it is handled. Not setting too much expectation but this would be one of the rare instances where Top Host/Provider cancelled a widely sold promotional plan due to less than ideal planning.

What planning should be done better? Every staff member that joined started off super optimistic and loved the idea of this specific plan. And in the beginning, the customers likely specifically from the two bigger LE* forums were totally fine. The problem is likely tied into as it propagated elsewhere. Within 2 months of working here, every single one has said I should get rid of it.

Let me give a rundown for other potential hosts looking to serve the market at this price-point. Despite the fact that these plans actually are profitable given our setup:

Plan for a significant portion of the customer base associated with this plan to do the following:

    • Be egregiously hostile on initial ticket
    • Start their opening salvo with threats of bad reviews everywhere if you don't bend over to their immediate demands
    • Create an entire cottage industry of resellers which push their support demands onto you (charge customers 1.5-2x what you do, break all AUP/TOS, make it your problem)
    • Randomly initiate PayPal chargebacks
    • Verbally insult staff
    • Do stuff that is clearly not appropriate (99% of our CSAM reports, 99% of our honeypot/abuse/SPAM reports, 99% of our resource abusers)
    • Make death threats to owner
    • SWAT business over being kicked off (and then get caught, lol)

Yes, you won't reverse my decision just like I won't reverse your opinion.

There's a hard and fast line. My promo's were too low, below the line, which unfortunately were far too tempting to the dredges of the internet. We can't have nice things.

I highly recommend everyone actually read the actual e-mail/release and I highly recommend you contact us if you are not part of said issue.

If VDS will meet your requirements, we use GSL full-time on and can even set custom filters on your specific IPs for our NL location. All EPYC servers, each server with > 1TB host-node RAM capacity, NVME Gen4, multiple links for redundancy, etc. Another option, others probably haven't mentioned, is having a protected IP on something like us from GSL or any other provider here with VDS or VPS and using a tunnel (gre) to forward it to your backend server for protection of that server if they're physically close. That's actually an extremely common setup for what you need.

There's also some providers who specialize in something known as "GRE remote protection" - they give you a GRE tunnel with dedicated public IPs on it, you use those to mount your web servers to, and they give you a panel to control the DDoS protection on those IPs. This is what I recommend for your use-case actually - 100%.

Basic commands for example to setup something like that would be (in this example 1.2.3.4/31 is the GRE IPs, 4.3.2.2/24 is your dedicated server IPs):

    • ip -4 route a default via 4.3.2.1 dev eth0 src 4.3.2.2 table 123
    • ip -4 rule a from 4.3.2.2 lookup 123
    • add the gre tunnel config and turn it on
    • ip -4 route r default via 1.2.3.4 dev gre1 src 1.2.3.5

Also can add that in /etc/network/interfaces for example as post-up commands under the GRE tunnel config. For extra security of the SSH service, you can even have it "listen" only on the original dedicated server IP and not the protected one, etc - to keep it from being targeted and only have your web services listen on that new IP.

You still need to give them valid proof/evidence. A good host will not act on "trust me bro".

Point to an obviously illegal file hosted on an IP under their control and I'm sure they'll take it down.

The existence of the material require children to be harmed first. It's antecedent not succedent. Responsibility over prolonged harm to children in captivity lies on the police and law enforcement, whom bestowed by law, the ability to investigate and catch these abusers.
As said by the other person. Could you prove beyond reasonable doubt @alexhost unnecessarily delay the takedown process for CSAM content or ignored it?

When you get an unverifiable report, what are you going to do? just blindly shut them down? bad actors use these tactics all the time. like crunchbits said they would just become an L7 DDoS service.

any privacy respecting service is bound to attract bad actors, does that still mean you don't verify blind, unverifiable claims? especially in the age where the primary tactic against people who promote privacy and government opposition is to plant CSAM?

We can offer you the ddos scrubbing side of things (PAYGO GRE/FOU/IPT/ETC),

As for servers since we only offer VDS/VPS we won't be able to make you an offer here.

im only interested in dedicated servers

That’s okay, but im letting you know that once you realize the insane performance of our VDS platform and the extreme care and finely tuned ddos mitigation, especially for TCP. You’ll love our platform!!

    i need high computing power

Our VDS platform is high performance,

We only use the following CPU's

    Ryzen 9950x,
    9275F
    9960X TR
    9970X TR
    9980X TR (Fully sold out)

You cant compare virtualized with bare metal performance lol?

Well, I don't really give a fuck about AlexHost. I can't stop them anyway, but I won't ever give them even $1.

There are a lot of reviews on Trustpilot confirming this claim. Their reputation on other forums says the same, and I already talked to people who seem to have direct contact with them, saying: "I never had a problem with the Alex guy."

So I'm 100% sure they did something in the past. I don't know if they still support CSAM.

They also request court orders for reports like these, as you can see from many reviews on Trustpilot and other reputation forums.

    https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6527cbf98aad0b8e15882e16

Here's an example story. I don't think everyone is making these stories up. If they were, other hosting providers would experience the same thing.

You really should be careful with such defamatory statements.

@Mandatori said: They also request court orders for reports like these

Which is legitimate. Many hosts don't want to look at the stuff themselves and will require either a lawful order or reporting by a trusted agency. In addition, in many cases they don't even have access to the material, e.g. if it's encrypted. In that case, they'd need either the password or a court order, otherwise they're just taking a claim at face value.

Of course you can, if there are no noisy neighbors (even better if you have one of those neat EPYCs that has a separate L3 for each core). And with VirtIO (or better yet, PCI passthrough e.g. SR-IOV rather than virtio-net), performance will be so close to native that you won't be able to tell the difference. The key is that you want a VDS rather than a VPS.

Thank you!

Your offer seems quite okay but i dont feel like supporting CP hosters

    link to this claim?

My guess is all the "evidence" in the accusation against alexhost is equally shallow (e.g. their lack of action being taken when a unverifiable report is sent their way).

    yes, absolutely.
you need to question everything and you can't blindly trust others.

They also request court orders for reports like these, as you can see from many reviews on Trustpilot and other reputation forums.

    https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/6527cbf98aad0b8e15882e16

Here's an example story. I don't think everyone is making these stories up. If they were, other hosting providers would experience the same thing.

Responding after 6 days is still considered normal. He described his wife adolescent/teenage nude photos when she was 10-13 YO and dating got posted. There's no indication that she was groomed or trafficked. So, girl during puberty doing stupid shit with presumably her ex childhood boyfriend.
This was 3 years ago, not yesterday. And you're unable to supply any kind of proof that indicate @alexhost involvement/indicted by the authority for the specific claim you are making.

We can offer you the ddos scrubbing side of things (PAYGO GRE/FOU/IPT/ETC),

As for servers since we only offer VDS/VPS we won't be able to make you an offer here.

im only interested in dedicated servers

That’s okay, but im letting you know that once you realize the insane performance of our VDS platform and the extreme care and finely tuned ddos mitigation, especially for TCP. You’ll love our platform!!

    i need high computing power

Our VDS platform is high performance,

We only use the following CPU's

    Ryzen 9950x,
    9275F
    9960X TR
    9970X TR
    9980X TR (Fully sold out)

You cant compare virtualized with bare metal performance lol?

Of course you can, if there are no noisy neighbors (even better if you have one of those neat EPYCs that has a separate L3 for each core). And with VirtIO (or better yet, PCI passthrough e.g. SR-IOV rather than virtio-net), performance will be so close to native that you won't be able to tell the difference. The key is that you want a VDS rather than a VPS.

    Yup, I agree

This is a benchmark someone took of our enterprise VDS platform.

If you don't need much storage and just want raw compute and ram this is the best option.
