DediRock's $7/year VPS, how long can i use it?

KyzKyz Member

last year, i bought @DediRock's $7/year 2GB VPS. my current use-case is covered by it, so i don't think i will need a higher specs for quite some times. it was quite a nice VPS so far, and i intend to renew it this august.

but i have some questions. not specifically to DediRock as a provider, but may also applies to VPS providers in general.

  • how long can i usually use this kind of service with such a price, before the provider raise the price for some reason? do providers usually announce it before raising the price?
  • as long as i don't do anything stupid, is there a guarantee that the provider won't shut down my service arbitrarily? do i just look for their reputation online? in which case, DediRock seems to have a good reputation here

If it was advertised as a recurring price, they usually won't raise the price and if they do, it'll create very bad PR for them and lots of drama. You can expect that recurring deals will last a long time. It happens, but it's rare.

Sometimes providers announce a price change in advance, sometimes they announce it right during renewal. For a $7/year VPS, that kind of price is a promo price, so just check how it was advertised when you bought it.

What's a bigger risk to your VPS is the provider deadpooling. Providers often go out of business, and all their VPSes go with them. That's surely the number one killer of dirt-cheap promo VPSes, not arbitrary cancellation.

There's never a guarantee, but it's very rare for a provider to just arbitrarily terminate a VPS. It usually happens if you abuse the VPS in some way (spam, excessive CPU or bandwidth, being abusive to staff in tickets, etc).

Remember, these providers have many thousands of clients. They aren't going to single you out unless you're doing something seriously out of the norm. And even then, they usually just suspend the VPS and tell you why. Then you open a ticket, apologize and say you won't overuse the resource, and they unsuspend it. Immediate terminations are typically reserved for things like blatant spam or malware distribution where it's obvious that you had ill-intent from the beginning.

Incidentally, there was an incident where DediRock cancelled someone's VPS (with refund) for being "too advanced" for them and it created a small shitstorm! I think DediRock learned from that incident, though.

in the case of DediRock, i think it's safe to say that they aren't going to deadpool any time soon, right? at least their reputation says so.

No idea. They definitely sell things very cheap, but they're also a reseller of ColoCrossing, which is large and does all the hard work for them. So I'm going to guess they won't deadpool anytime soon, but there's always a risk.

A good reputation is no proof that a host won't deadpool. Sometimes quite the opposite: A provider that sells everything at a loss will become very popular and loved, until their finances dry up and they suddenly close shop.

Btw, you should always keep backups just in case the VPS does disappear. There's a saying: "No backup == no worth".

Quality is also too cheap, so you will not use it for a day.

  • I'd actually be quite keen on getting a year's VPS for the price of a bag of fries. So far, their service seems stable, and they seem to be aware of and working on fixing some bugs.

  • I'm still using VPS that i bought +/- 10 years ago. It very much depends though. I've also had plans force migrated into more expensive options, hosts deadpool, ...

There's just too many factors to make a prediction regarding what will happen to your DediRock VPS. I doubt they'll deadpool any time soon but if prices keep rising they'll probably have too many $7/y clients to just eat a possible loss.

Been using some for over a decade with ridiculously low pricing. Never been an issue.

@DediRock isn't going anywhere would be my best bet. If it works, it works. Just renew it. Won't find a safer bet at 7/y unless you find an ultra limited deal.

    Hey @Kyz,

How are you man? Very glad to hear everything is working well for you and you plan to renew, it is great to hear.

To answer your questions, the plan is to honor all prices on renewals that a customer purchased them at the start, basically it is grandfathered in on that product :) We may not offer it at this time again for that price etc however your renewal won't change.

Being realistic, if it does ever need to change though, we would definitely send out notice and give customers plenty of time or at least some really good alternatives to their current deal.

In terms of our stability, we have a very good financial policy that allows us to grow, learn, and adjust to the current marketplace in order to continue offering great service at great prices. Feel free to DM me at any time if you have any further questions, always here to help.
