@ralf said: I've never restored in anger from some of these slow storage.

Ha ha. That was me some eons ago. Then gradually I wisened up idled more performant servers. I realized that some of these wouldn't even keep/retain data properly and Mr. Murphy was always watching to ensure that things crashed right before I decided to use them (mind you, I've gotten better at idling them for longer to ensure they're reliable of course but then once I use them, Mr. Jinxit colludes with Mr.Murphy to ensure failure probability hits 1.0).

I prefer LONG lived storage VMs as a result and I can tolerate slowness but prefer both the host and the setup to be reliable + durable + competant enough for me to get some confidence that I can restore if things go south.

Yeah, FWIW I've been incredibly happy with my HostHatch storage servers. Apart from some teething troubles with one (server hang on writes, which I think was a ceph issue) they've been reliable and at least the local ones have been great. Thinking about it I've used the London and LA ones for file transfers to work and both have been solid latency wise. (I was getting terrible transfer rate to my work VPN in LA, but copying stuff to my London HH, then from there to LA HH, and then accessing that from work was perfect)

EDIT: I should also add that all of my dedis all have 1-2TB of disk, and so I also back up all my important stuff to all 3 dedis as well.

EDIT 2: while setting up the new VPS below, and seeing shocking network performance, I remembered that was a problem with some of my backups timing out when I first started. I just set them to run at a different time during the night and all was well. But yeah, I suspect one of their customers is absolutely trashing the network during US daytime.

I'm using BOTH Restic and Borg to not just have (5-4-)3-2-1 with different hosts+setups+FS but even different backup tools just in case...

Good idea. I actually use different borg passwords on each server, so in theory they should compress differently and it's unlikely that all of my backups would fail (as I have 8 for the important things), but you're right that maybe using a different system as well is good. Although even that I'm less bothered about as web is also rsync'd from the master to 3 other live systems and I have all my business critical git repos on multiple dev machines too.

Actually, I just noticed that I previously had run a YABS as the result was in my spreadsheet. Xeon E5-2680 v4, 1041. I guess they migrated me to a crappy node after the recent RAID failure where all my data got wiped. :/

Much love for @DediRock - I raised a ticket pointing out the regression, and after verifying that I had a backup of all my data, they recreated my system on a better node without any hassles.

Just a quick heads-up โ€” weโ€™re not able to offer $99/year (or similar) plans. With current costs, that pricing simply isnโ€™t sustainable. Our annual plans start at $200+ per year.

    $200/y you say? Yes please!

I have that same chicken in the same location (LT) and I'm very happy with it. It's an all-around solid VPS. I just wish the bandwidth cap was a bit higher than 8 TB! But it's such a great deal that I really can't complain.

What are you doing with a 30GB disk that requires more than 8TB of bandwidth?

That means you're transferring the disk 273 times a month! Or 8.8 times a day!

It runs a Tor non-exit relay (which uses almost no disk). After about half of the month is through, the relay enters hibernation for its remainder as it approaches the bandwidth cap. I plan to set up Hyphanet (a lower-bandwidth distributed data store) to make use of the free 10 Mbps that remains even when the bandwidth cap has been exceeded.

European relays tend to use a lot more bandwidth than non-European relays.

This is the relay (ignore the incorrect GeoIP info, it's in LT not the US):
    https://metrics.torproject.org/rs.html#details/58F46CEEA4E3BB6EDA3E37BAD31E1326D61E17D4

Be careful, we dont allow it per our TOS, this is already listed in Prohibited Usage:

"- Tor exit nodes, Tor relays, Tor bridges, Tor hidden services, or any other Torโ€‘related activity"

(Edit) It wasn't in the AUP when I first read it. It must be a relatively new addition. Damn. :/
    https://web.archive.org/web/20251205021353/https://solidvps.com/acceptable-usage-policy.php

I think @Jar has a reason for disliking you. Public Tor is usually not allowed on VPS.
You should have consulted the vendor beforehand, instead of exploiting the TOS vulnerability in @SolidVPS.
Nevertheless, suppliers also have the right to fix the loopholes.

You're thinking of Tor exits. Almost every VPS provider allows non-exits. :)

I always consult the ToS and AUP before purchasing a product, which is proper.
