IS there a considerable difference in page load time between SSD and NVME ?
Hi guys,
Just wondering if there is a practical advantage in page loading time with NVME drives? also are there any other advantages with NVME drives? i am considering two hosting offers, one has an NVME and the other one is almost the same but with an SSD and is much cheaper.

NVMe is more faster than normal SSD as I know.
Generally, it'll be faster on NVMe. It depends on your use cases though.
Nothing you would probably notice on a low traffic website. However, from what I see here so far, everyone is getting billions of traffics on their webprojects.
I am In a similar boat. OVH nvme VPs or a dedicated e3-1230v6 with SSD to host about 80 sites.
If you're running WordPress, likely yes. Also running your db on nvme also seems to be faster. I've also seen lower cpu load but don't quote me on that definitively.
This, while I dont have any "scientific" numbers to back this, DB will probably benefit more than lets say loading static websites.
You should compare performance on identical devices. It is incorrect to compare NVMe in a virtual environment and SSD on dedicated servers. On identical devices, if the NVMe drive is connected directly, it will outperform the SSD in the speed test. In about 10 times as far as i could recall. Of course if we talk about synthetic test. From webmaster point of view i doubt that difference would be recognized by human in speed of site opening or speed of site working at all.
NVMe has many advantages, but not for small/static websites (or low-traffic websites).

Short answer: maybe
Does your project benefit from it? All depends. NVMe will be the clear winner in IOPS and read/write speed (~10x faster on Gen4), however there's a difference between Gen3 and Gen4 performance. You also have uncertainties like: maybe the SSDs are all enterprise-grade high TBW units and the NVMe is an old gamer Gen3 unit (or vice-versa).
You can still get very respectable performance out of some RAID-10 SSDs that likely fit the bill for 9/10 use-cases and have no negligible effect on anything. The one exception I've seen to this is highly-tuned managed Wordpress stuff: they have a very specific asks but that is generally RAID-10 Gen4 NVMe and/or Gen5 NVMe related.
Specialists tested in the speed of games on SSD and NVMe came to the conclusion that there is no difference in speed. For pages it must be the same way.
First consider RAM, second - storage. Linux heavily cache data in ram. So if there is enough ram, disk i/o does not matter much. RAMdisk ftw.
See what I mean? There simply is no sensible answer because your question is utterly unspecific.

You won't feel a different for low to mid traffic web site as the web server will use ram to cache the website anyway
