how to extend swap on a low mem OpenVZ box?

cxgcxg Member

I wanted to run a yabs including geekbench5/6 on a 512MB NAT VPS running under OpenVZ.
I thought I just create a swap file in filesystem but that does not work.
But I get a permissions error swapon: /swapfile: swapon failed: Operation not permitted.
So is this not possible with OpenVZ or is there another route to success?
Thanks for any hints.

  • OpenVZ says no.

Your host would need to increase it for you - there's a good chance they will if you ask them.

Both @Cam and @natvps_uk declined such requests in the past.

Best solution: need more resources, pay more money.

    Thanks for your input.
I don't believe they would grant me additional swap, because disk seems to be at its limits already. Anyway need to decide if I keep this.

  • The error you're encountering (swapon failed: Operation not permitted) is due to this restriction.

Ask Your Host or consider optimizing your applications or processes to use less memory.

Running memory-intensive tests on a low-memory VPS can be challenging due to swap's slower performance compared to RAM.

  • its already 2023 we should not buy VPS less than 2GB DDR4 RAM.

    What about IPv6-only / NAT vps's?

IPv6-only and NAT are overrated. however due to IPv4 cost then consumers with limited budget settle for less.

DDR4 on the other hand is dirt cheap and can only benefit from economies of scale

    What, lulz.

Wholesale dirt is 15€ / ton. You won't buy any DDR4 for that price.
