How does Ubuntu choose the DNS server to use?

I start an AdGuard Home on localhost last week and use the 53 port as a DNS server. However, when I check the dashboard today, I found there is no request to my local AdGuard Home 53 port. When I run nslookup lowendtalk.com, I found the Ubuntu choose to use my local network DNS server and never use the localhost DNS server.

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04, and my network interface eth0 configured uses DHCP.

I stop the systemd-resolved.service. I did not configure the /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolv.conf

So how does the Ubuntu choose which DNS server to use, Or just use the DNS server DHCP config?

  • It'll just use the DNS provided by ISP with DHCP right? You'll need to manually set the DNS

  • By default it uses DHCP but you can reconfigure that. On Ubuntu, I think netplan is the easiest way to do it.
