How Do You Plan Network Bandwidth for a VPS?

When choosing or managing a VPS, I think network bandwidth is easy to overlook compared with CPU, RAM, and storage.

For a VPS, the actual bandwidth requirement can depend heavily on what the server is being used for. A basic website may have different traffic needs compared with a backup server, media service, monitoring system, or application that transfers larger files.

I usually look at both the port speed and the amount of included traffic. A VPS may have a high-speed network interface. That does not necessarily mean the workload can continuously use that speed without reaching a monthly traffic limit.

I also think peak usage is worth considering. If backups or large transfers run, at times checking traffic patterns can help determine whether the available network capacity is enough.

Another factor is the location of the VPS and the network path to the users or services it communicates with. Latency and routing can sometimes matter more than having a high advertised port speed.

Before changing providers or upgrading a VPS, I would first check traffic usage, peak bandwidth, transfer volume, and whether the current network connection is becoming a limitation.

For those running VPS or small server environments, how do you normally estimate the bandwidth you need?

    Monthly traffic limits. I use servers for relaying traffic, so whatever the allowed usage is, I divide that by two and that gives me an estimate of how much traffic I can relay. I de-rate that to 90% so that I have a safe buffer.
