  • So looks like WordPress is blocking wordpress.org plugins from sideloading and getting updates from outside of wordpress.org https://x.com/SybreWaaijer/status/1845758912856789236?t=E0kmbBgcuEMVQtMLjKp_Kw&s=19

Also seems another WPEngine plugin has been blocked on wordpress.org Nitropack

    https://x.com/getnitropack/status/1845742870554112262?t=XKuaMDLOacHboFwuqB7BGw&s=19

  • I just logged in wordpress.org, and there is even a checkbox "I am not affiliated with WP Engine in any way, financially or otherwise." :o

    Yeah blame Matt

Wow someone lost $40k contract over this WordPress drama https://www.reddit.com/r/Wordpress/comments/1g3rwwm/you_asked_how_were_suffering_as_a_result_of/ :(

I just updated my WordPress plugin mirror system proof of concept to support Github hosted plugins as well like ACF https://github.com/centminmod/wordpress-plugin-mirror-poc#Github-hosted-plugins 🤓

  • Wow https://www.reddit.com/r/Wordpress/s/VEfD17yG25

We lost a $14k client and Matt's response was to say he could refer clients to us if we stop working with WP Engine.

  • Anyone have some Wordpress alternatives that are worth looking into? Anything outside of Joomla and Drupal.

OK, enough. I'm going to replace WP. I don't support Mafia behaviour (except when they cure cases of a critical lack of lead in the body. That asshole might be such a case).

Quick question: Can somebody tell us a short list of security problems they had with their site, preferably with technical details and/or links? No particular reason, I'm just generally interested * smirk

    Thanked by 1danninov
  • Wondering if there's a simple way to host Ghost using Cpanel/DA.

To me, all this seems to look as a trademark dispute. It is not about the code itself, it is about money from using the brand's name. Basically the founder wants to protect the name and get money from people making profits by using precisely that name or logo.

It somewhat makes sense for a founder to protect his project from having the project's name associated with abusers or possible bad actors.

I tend to agree, but it turned out silly, and highly likely with consequences.

That is a fair stance and I completely understand the intent but it's more the way that the enforcement is being pushed out that is alarming the community.

i agree to it. many people (novice too) still think.. WP Engine is WordPress Engine or something main holder/service provider of hosted wordpress and is part of/related to Wordpress .com. They can't differntiate that it is 3rd party provider. That's how WPE ate the entire cake hosting about 1 million sites all these years.

I've been using (and helping others learn how to use) Wordpress for about a decade. What I've seen (and heard) over the years:

    • Folks jump to Bluehost thinking it's a good provider (has been the top recommendation on wp.org for years) - yes, many times.
    • Folks mistaking wordpress.com (the paid, Matt's version) for wordpress.org (the "free open source" - though it seems we'll see about that) - yes, many, many times.
    • Folks mixing WP Engine for an official wordpress provider - never, ever.

  • So Matt is now banning WPEngine sponsoring WordCamp events which are organised by volunteers that love and want to promote WordPress !

Except that WordPress has always said that using "WP" is entirely acceptable (and that they don't have a trademark on that anyway) and nobody has ever confused WPEngine with WordPress.com.

"The Founder" is having a very public meltdown and trying to burn his own community to the ground, for reasons nobody has yet figured out yet.

He is just mad because someone is more successful in using his "baby" than he ever could.

Yet another control freak in IT, not only he faked "foundation control", he was also enforcing GPL on every plugin/theme (turns out it was just to be able to steal the code), and created an echo chamber inside the company by kicking out paying the ones who disagree to leave.

  • Matt is kicking out more Automattic staff

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Wordpress/comments/1g5q7vh/details_of_new_alignment_offer/

New alignment offer: I guess some people were sad they missed the last window. Some have been leaking to the press and ex-employees. That’s water under the bridge. Maybe the last offer needed to be higher. People have said they want a new window, so this is my attempt.

Here’s a new one: You have until 00:00 UTC Oct 17 (~4 hours) to DM me the words “I resign and would like to take the 9-month buy-out offer.” You don’t have to say any reason, or anything else. I will reply “Thank you.” Automattic will accept your resignation, you can keep your office stuff and work laptop; you will lose access to Automattic and W.org (no slack, user accounts, etc). HR will be in touch to wrap up details in the coming days, including your 9 months of compensation, they have a lot on their plates right now. You have my word this deal will be honored. We will try to keep this quiet, so it won’t be used against us, but I still wanted to give Automatticians another window.

Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg made another buyout offer this week, and threatened employees who speak to the press with termination.
After an exodus of employees at Automattic who disagreed with CEO Matt Mullenweg’s recently divisive legal battle with WP Engine, he’s upped the ante with another buyout offer—and a threat that employees speaking to the press should “exit gracefully, or be fired tomorrow with no severance.”

Earlier this month, Mullenweg posed an “Alignment Offer” to all of his employees: Stand with him through a messy legal drama that’s still unfolding, or leave.
But many stayed at Automattic even though they didn't agree with Mullenweg’s actions, telling 404 Media they remained due to financial strain or the challenging job market. Several employees who remained at the company describe a culture of paranoia and fear for those still there.

“Overall, the environment is now full of people who unequivocally support Matt's actions, and people who couldn't leave because of financial reasons (and those are mostly silent),” one Automattic employee told me.

The current and former Automattic employees I spoke to for this article did so under the condition of anonymity, out of concerns about retaliation from Mullenweg.

I think the asshole makes that offer for one reason only: he wants to be prepared for employees who loose their trust in him and probably also to get rid of those he considers "not loyal enough". So if push comes to shove he can say "your honour, the fired people (suing me) had a more than fair chance to leave".

He obviously needs protection and tries to achieve it that way, probably with major shareholders breathing down his neck.

May karma set a real hard example for what a bitch it can be ...

  • Probably the other way, investor have too much control and pushed him too much, and this is the way he is retaliating...asking people to fork wordpress by making him/company look bad...as he is trying to down the company...just another of my speculation...highly probably not true at all...

  • Lot's of vacant job offers in Automattic/WP now!!!
People should join them (those who don't want to get into WPE-Automattic BS drama)
