WireSix's Network Issues

ConnorlConnorl Member
edited April 2013 in General

Did a speed test on one of our nodes at WireSix ( @RyanD ). Top one is a SpeedTest from INSIDE the datacenter, on one of their server, and one from outside. Here are the results:

Other: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2629387371.png

I have been waiting for a reply on this ticket, for 48 hours, and they are not interested in helping at all.

At the moment, I am inclined to say, STAY AWAY FROM THEM.

  • Adding, WireSix is Ran/Owned by @RyanD

  • Thats on a 100Mb port, (Note the Upload Speed, I have less of an issue with the download)

  • Nice sensational topic title.

Ouch.. looks like a line is being overused.

Why didn't you go with QuickPacket?

  • Guess: your nic is in half duplex?

    Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm betting it is something like this. Your server's Ethernet port probably didn't auto-negotiate nicely with the switch.

  • I ran a test, too:

    From my box at wiresix:

    cd /var/www/html/
    wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test
    (11.3 MB/s) - “100mb.test” saved

From a vps at Leaseweb (Manassas):

    wget http://my-box-at-wiresix/100mb.test
    (10.9 MB/s) - “/tmp/100mb.test”

Seems like upload is about the same as download for me.

  • @connorl: What did you use to perform these tests?

  • @Damian SpeedTest.net, Il get you the link to the scripts

    Looks like speedtest-cli with --share

  • All of out other servers are a lot better, but not amazing. Once I have this one fixed, Il look at the others.

  • @Ishaq said: Looks like speedtest-cli with --share

    Correct :)

  • I hate the thread title. It immediately makes me ignore what you're saying.

    With Wiresix?

    Yes.

Why did you need to create a thread for this?

Your problem seems like something that will be easily resolved through a support ticket.

Speedtest-cli is flawed. I can't say that I care enough to figure out why, but it is. My upload speed from it is around 50mbit no matter the server choice, meanwhile I can copy my backups over to QuickPacket from the same server and cap the gigabit port on both ends. Although I'm trying not to do that too much ;)

  • @serverian said: Why did you need to create a thread for this?

Wondering if anyone else had issues.

Been 48 hours waiting for them ....

  • What kind of real world speeds are you getting?

    This.

  • Clearly this one test presents an entire picture of their network . . . thus everyone should STAY AWAY FROM THEM. Heaven forbid, one is from INSIDE the network!!! If your ticket hasn't been responded to try to get it escalated.

That's definitely not how this thread was written originally.

If you're not happy with the support ticket turnaround time, try to escalate your ticket. Maybe PM @RyanD on here.

  • I have tried SCPing something to another server, and got 110kbps.

I keep replying, and they continue to tell me to run traces, but surely the problem lies with them?

I thought you said they hadn't responded in 48 hours?

  • @qps said: I thought you said they hadn't responded in 48 hours?

I replied, they last responded about 48 hours ago.

If you aren't giving them the information they are asking for to be able to diagnose the problem, maybe that's why they aren't responding.

  • @Connorl said: but surely the problem lies with them

Who knows? What comprehensive testing have you done to eliminate all other possibilities?

  • RyanDRyanD Member

    Connor,

As mentioned in the ticket, the servers are unmanaged, if you need us to look at anything inside the server it is the $5/Ticket charge. There are no problems on the network level and as others have indicated it looks very much like a duplex mismatch as there are no capacity constraints from within our network.

Check your duplex on the nic, mii-tool or ethtool. You should make sure you are set to 100/full

    ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full

  • Hi Ryan,

I already agreed to pay the $5 charge, Il do that now.

    Many Thanks,

    Connor
