Smallest UK VPS for using BBC iPlayer?

Hi everyone,

looking for a cheap uk vps just for watching some BBC shows (SSH remote forwarding proxy, VPN not needed). I just tune in once a week or so, it's more about having the possibility to watch it. Sometimes I'd like to download some programme with get-iplayer so at least a small amout of harddrive is needed.

So specs would be:

  • 64MB Ram
  • 4 GB HDD
  • 50GB bandwidth / month

I don't need this vps for anything else. Also, just using it as a proxy would not generate any load at all so I don't care about performance.

Is anyone here able to provide one of those for a really low price? Unfortunately I missed the edis.at offer on LEB, but the price they had would be what I think of. So in numbers I would pay 15€/y (VAT incl.) for that.

    Not a problem, happy to help :)

  • @chrisp seems like stormvz can fit your needs also, their 64mb is usd 12 per year.

    @chrisp http://stormvz.com/yearly/ (£7.50/year)

    :)

    @AsadHaider We have UK SAS & NJ SSD in yearly plans to

  • I know this is slightly OT but since I am trying to use BBC iplayer with a vpn on a vps I thought I'd ask! I'm currently using an edis.at vps based in UK with pptpd. No problems using the vpn or proxy when accessing iplayer through a pc but with an ipad/apple TV2 I get an error: 'not enough bandwidth to play this file...' - well, there clearly is enough so I'm confused. Has anyone else come across this problem? I just wonder whether the problem lies with edis.at's Austrian roots: certain sites think I'm in Austria & present me with German ads. It would be helpful if someone could try using a 'genuine' UK IP address with their IPAD and given me some feedback :)

  • Have no experience with both, but Httpzoom has 500gb bandwidth while StormVZ has 250gb.

  • +1 for httpzoom's £7.50 a year plan, I used it for exactly the same purpose, running TinyProxy for a friend in Australia for a while.

    I've also had a StormVZ plan for a month, support has been great and the service and speed excellent so far.

  • I hope you all have an valid TV license for this.

    Thanks for the big up guys!

  • @httpzoom, I've just signed up for the same purpose. Is there any way to make PPTP or OpenVPN possible? I mean enabling TUN/TAP and PPP?

    I tried both Polipo, Tinyproxy and Squid but I couldn't see anything else just Google. Any idea why did it happen? The Squid default config should just work (I mean it's open and stupid but it works, isn't it?) For video streaming what is generally recommended, VPN or HTTP Proxy?

    @djvdorp they both have the exact same bandwith

    @StormVZ: do you have TUN/TAP option in the control center?

    It might be anecdotal, and I've never done anything in the way of proper testing, but VPN has always seemed a lot quicker to me in general.

    I've never had any problems using iPlayer on the iPad through any of my UK-based VPN's.

    I second this. I don't pay mine for others to get it free :P

  • I'm a license payer, and my friend in Australia also is. Happy?

    Huh, you can pay for a UK TV License in another country?

    The TV license is paid for in advance, and she never stopped paying it anyway on account on knowing she was coming back to the UK.

    Understood, i wasn't targeting you personally either-way :)

  • You Brits and your TV licenses.

    I know, just didn't want anyone to think I'm a tea-leaf or promote license dodging.

    I know, I appreciate the work the BBC does, but I almost exclusively watch US TV these days, very little I enjoy on UK TV (although I do much prefer our comedies).

    @Nekki.
    Thanks for the feedback. Are any of the services you have used mentioned in this thread... and if so, which ones?

    @Kairus.
    I find the service that the BBC provides is second to none & I openly admit that I'm happy to pay the paltry £130 a year for it - granted, it is more a tax rather than a subscription. I think that's cheap for what we Brits get. I do a fair amount of travelling to various countries and nothing beats it.

    @zsero drop us a support ticket and we will get tun/tap enabled.

    I haven't used any of the providers in this thread specifically for the purpose of VPN on an tablet or phone, but I've been using a StormVZ plan for OpenVPN for a little under a month and I've always had good speeds and no downtime that I've noticed.

    I briefly ran OpenVPN on httpZoom's 64mb plan, it ran perfectly well but I was about 32mb into the burst the entire time, so I stopped it before I upset anyone. I used the same VPS with TinyProxy as mentioned above, and speeds were always good, it was used exclusively for streaming video and radio.

    No problem with that, but httpzoom has 250 gig too! You might have looked at the 12 pounds package, that's the one with 500.

    About TV License:
    http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/playing_tv_progs/tvlicence

    You do not need a television licence to catch-up on television programmes in BBC iPlayer
    And of course, the whole point of iPlayer is that you are watching catch-up, not live!

  • I use evorack for this, 2.99 a month, bullet proof.

  • @zsero thanks my fault i think :(

    @djvdorp @zsero, I think the main difference between ourselves and StormVz is they are located in Redstation ( http://www.redstation.com/ ) and we are in Rapidswitch ( http://www.rapidswitch.com/ ).

    They do have faster drives than we do on our OpenVZ node however.
