  • So that does indicate some sort of node or at least switch specific issue with @kryps vm --- or perhaps they are actually limiting you for some reason.

So far I have only used DO for tests and dev work with miniscule bandwidth usage. I have had this account for some time so my account was grandfathered in for "unlimited" bandwidth.

  • @kryps said: so my account was grandfathered in for "unlimited" bandwidth.

    Mine as well.

Did they ever get back to you in the ticket? Something wrong with node or switch port for sure!

  • @luma Yes, they escalated it to a senior engineer who will look into it.

@murky said: ITT: bitchy idiots who are too scared to tell support they're having bandwidth performance issues

    Please, get a grip.

This is their reply which is far from useful.

There is a common misconception that having a 1Gbps link means you can download at 1Gbps, this is not the case. Please lookup "bandwidth delay product", this explains what the theoretical maximum download speed can be.
You will see that 1Gbps is only possible if you are very close geographically to where you are downloading from because latency degrades your maximum performance dramatically, so much so that 80ms of latency will make it impossible to download at anywhere close to 1Gbps without resizing the tcp window which would need to be done at every hop through the network, which would be impossible.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

    Thanks,
    Etel

  • @ftpit said: without resizing the tcp window which would need to be done at every hop through the network

Uh? o.O What do the hops along a path have to do with TCP window scaling?

    Senior engineering bullshit.

Etel is usually very helpful. Probably just copy and paste from senior engineering.

  • another bamn or drmike?

  • @murky said: Is the slow speed you got when downloading a test file (for no good reason) affecting your life? :(

We are both paying the same price. He is getting under 100KB/s I am getting over 20MB/s

I would be trying to figure it out as well.

The answer from Etel is also worrying, very canned and silly.

13-15 MB/s from Cachefly on my NY DigitalOcean droplet.

Also, I'm beginning to regret letting @murky win the domain contest.

    Does that pain you, somehow?

    @gubbyte obviously

  • Are you on the trial? I heard somewhere they they limit your link until you add CC information.

@Spencer said: Delete the droplet then create a new one.

No, create a new one, then delete the old one.

This will ensure you get a different IP address, and most likely a different h/w node too.

Heck, create 5-10, test all of them, nuke all the ones you don't like.
A common way to solve any DO performance issues you might have. ^^

  • @Nick_A said: @gubbyte obviously

    Pffff... Another one =/
    /derail

  • The reply on my ticket is different from the one they gave @ftpit. After all I am not expecting Gbit link performance but a bit more than 1Mbit/sec would be nice. ;)

DigitalOceans latest update to my ticket:
"I agree with your findings that your droplet is under performing. We are still investigating the cause and will keep you updated as we find and repair the issue."

    I know that

I have better speeds elsewhere, they are just for testing :) .@murky you are the one who told me to create a support ticket

  • @rm_ said: No, create a new one, then delete the old one.

Well just creating a single additional one did not help me - same speed.

Heck, create 5-10, test all of them, nuke all the ones you don't like.

That is a bit of a hassle. Also it seems quite possible that a node performing well currently goes bad at some point. That means that constant monitoring is required.

To me the main advantage of DO is the possibility to spin up nodes quickly. Ramnode, Buyvm, etc. are not really an option because of their limited stock. I would even be willing to pay DO a bit more for consistent performance (maybe a guaranteed quota on CPU, RAM and bandwidth with burstable CPU/bandwidth if more is available).

  • I am trying 10 downloads in parallel from OVH right now and get 100KB/sec on each. Traffic shaping?

  • After testing from some more locations I am under the following impression:

DigitalOcean or their upstream provider limit outgoing bandwidth of traffic going over their Cogent link to around 100KB/sec per individual TCP stream except for their speedtest servers which reside on a different subnet.

The Level3 upstream links do not seem to be limited thus.

limit outgoing bandwidth of traffic going over their Cogent link to around 100KB/sec per individual TCP stream

Just got 102 Mbit/sec outgoing from DO NY over the Cogent link:

    [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
    [ 3] 0.0-10.1 sec 122 MBytes 102 Mbits/sec

  • @rm_ What options did you use for iperf?

  • @rm_ iperf gives me better results than HTTP/FTP, around 10Mbits/sec per TCP stream:
    [ 6] 0.0-10.3 sec 12.0 MBytes 9.77 Mbits/sec
    [ 4] 0.0-10.9 sec 12.1 MBytes 9.29 Mbits/sec
    [ 5] 0.0-11.4 sec 12.1 MBytes 8.90 Mbits/sec
    [ 7] 0.0-12.0 sec 12.1 MBytes 8.50 Mbits/sec
    [ 8] 0.0-12.4 sec 12.1 MBytes 8.18 Mbits/sec
    [ 9] 0.0-12.8 sec 12.1 MBytes 7.92 Mbits/sec
    [ 10] 0.0-13.4 sec 12.2 MBytes 7.66 Mbits/sec
    [SUM] 0.0-13.4 sec 84.9 MBytes 53.1 Mbits/sec

    @kryps just the default options
iperf -s on a VPS from a different provider
iperf -c <hostname> on my DO VPS.
it uploads data in one stream for 10 seconds from client to server by default.

  • OK, finally got myself droplet with fast(er) transfer after cycling through some. I will keep that for now.

On the other hand I hit their default limit of five active droplets and my fifth droplet is not starting (hanging in "new" state without IP address) and two that I destroyed are in state "Your destroy is processing".

That's on AMS1, looks fine to me. Their support is useless though, I was on a node with abysmal I/O (dd < 20 MB/s), but they told me it's nothing to worry about. I packed my stuff and moved to another node; everything has been smooth as a silk ever since.

A lot of people are reporting droplet creation problems in NY in DO IRC at this very moment.

  • krypskryps Member

    Just a last heads-up:

The DigitalOcean staff was very helpful and fixed the issue(s). I have deleted the original underperforming droplet and can not reproduce the problems described anymore for any newly created droplets.
