Curiosity - LEB on Mars

Curiosity uses BAE RAD750, custom build PowerPC 750 with 256MB of RAM and 2GB flash memory (200 MIPS power similar to Pentium 133, it you want to achieve the performance of Samsung Galaxy S III you need around 70 RAD750 CPUs) - it looks like we have first LEB on Mars :D

The main problem is not the power usage, it is simply not more needed and the heat is a problem as well as stability.

The ballpark cost of a radiation hardened CPU like the PowerPC 750 is about 200K USD; you then should add similar costs for other radiation hardened parts to complete the computer. Not really a LEB price.

How is this thing even running? It plans to run for two years? Is it using solar power to gather energy, hence the LEB spec?

The official plan is to run it for 2 years, however these goals are very conservative. It has a nuclear battery (4,8 Kilogramm Plutonium-238-Dioxid) that will provide enough power (100w) for 14 years.

Didnt Nasa mention that their uplink between the curiosity, or any "space" exploration is horrificly bad? Due to satelite frequencies?

Well the uplink from Curiosity directly to the earth is extremly bad, like 700 bits/second (in the X band). However it also has a 2nd antenna to communicate with the satellites orbiting Mars, which have a bandwidth of 2-6 Mb/s to the earth.

Doesn't majority of the datacenters use raised floors? Therefore, technically they are in the air but they have yet to prevent any raids from the FBI.
