Starting with vpn
I want to setup my own secure vpn for my holidays. I have kvm 128mb vps for it. My devices range from an android 4.0 phone to a MacBook pro and windows pc. The first 2 should be able to use it preferable. I know @black had a great openvpn? Config in some other topic?
Should I setup PPTP, L2TP, IPSec, SSL and why/how do they compare? Sorry for the noob questions here.
Thanks all for your time and experiences!

use openvpn
http://www.giganews.com/vyprvpn/compare-vpn-protocols.html is a good comparison of the different VPN protocols.
PPTP for mobile devices
You can use OpenVPN on Android.
PPTP is incredibly damn simple to setup and use.
Otherwise, go with OpenVPN and get the client + Android app.
And you dont need root either!

i use that
@DanielM i was going to say, pptp + openswan/xl2tpd.
but you just made my day.
If you are rooted though, the OpenVPN client that requires root is still better.
i am guessing it requires rooting your android yes
Thanks, might setup openvpn with @black's config.
@black thanks for the nice overview and @DanielM thanks for proving the overview wrong (openvpn can do mobile devices)
Ty all!
Download the beta version (That has no such limits)
http://www.featvpn.com/sites/default/files/beta4-0529.apk
Nope.
FeatVPN Doesnt need root.
You're probably going to get 1/3 (at best) of your best download speed even after tweaking the MTU and mssfix settings.
Personally, I'd go with
ssh -vv -D
to create ssh tunnel and use the socks5 protocol. They should work fine on your mac and your PC. I was able to max out my download and upload speed that way. Just a quick note on ssh tunneling - external applications that are called upon by the browser, such as flash and java will not load through the ssh tunnel.BS.
I can get 70Mbps + On my VPN
L2TP.
edit nvm
http://openvztemplates.com/vpn-debian.php
Setup Proxmox at home, use one of these templates and forward ports in router. done
Wont let me download em. keep on getting redirected.
links are all dead, noticed that after I posted here...
And then he needs to deal with the proxmox thing ¬_¬
FFS keep the things simple...
@danielM do you use openvpn or openvpn-as?
Anyone got a decent tutorial for debian 6 setup with my android phone?
tried following this but miss how to use it with FEAT VPN.. http://wiki.debian.org/OpenVPN/
i use openvpn as, If you need help email me, you already know my email
@danielM thanks, works great now! Openvpn-as supplied the .ovpn file I needed too
Tutorial I followed was this one: http://docs.openvpn.net/how-to-tutorialsguides/virtual-platforms/install-openvpn-access-server-on-linux-debian-6/
One question left: my box is pretty lowend (128mb kvm from edis) and uses ~80mb with openvpn-as. If I understand it correctly, openvpn-as is just openvpn with the neat interface and such? Might installing openvpn lower my mem.usage or would it not make any real difference?
speed is pretty good btw
@djvdorp OpenVPN AS uses a lot more memory than regular OpenVPN.
@dmmcintyre3 I already guessed so :P
This looks like a decent tutorial for the openvpn regular package:
http://library.linode.com/networking/openvpn/debian-6-squeeze
I just use the one at the Frantech wiki.
You have a 70Mbps+ home internet connection? I'm currently using openvpn from the debian 6 repos, not sure if that makes a difference. What does your server.conf and client.conf look like? How much memory is it using on average?
Hopefully you are not using the cachefly file...
i have 100Mbps at home. The actual sync is around 107Mbps but yeh. And am using openvpn-as so its just generic config files.
What's the memory usage on your VPN nodes?
