OVH Canada Test

OVH Canada Test

I know this is a bit of a short notice,

but those of you guys who want a free server from OVH just check their twitter and go here: http://www.ovh.ie/dedicated_servers/usa_order_beta.xml

They're dropping another 100 free dedicated beta servers up (free till August) in 15 minutes.

Just wanted to let the LET community know!

  • They dropped some vKS about an hour or so ago as well. Looks interesting but quite low-end.

Still waiting for a dedi that I snagged a week ago, grumblegrumble..

"We are in a prison drama. This is like The Shawshank Redemption, only with more tunneling through shit and no fucking redemption."
  • @ihatetonyy yeah that vKS was a 128mb ram VPS. I'd rather mess around in a ded than a VPS because... well... I already have tons of VPS thanks to LEB grumblegrumblewalletgrumble

  • How long does it take to get the activation code?

Great budget VPS hosting @ http://basshost.com

  • I don't know I've been waiting for it for a while.

Apparently Twitter is having problems with direct messages though.

    Catalyst Host - Pie Approved!
  • @BassHost @HalfEatenPie I got mine pretty much right after clicking the button, for both the vKS and the dedi, in TweetDeck.

Try refreshing the page and/or checking in a client, perhaps?

"We are in a prison drama. This is like The Shawshank Redemption, only with more tunneling through shit and no fucking redemption."
  • oh ... I was thinking they didn't like me for a minute. Lol. Oh well time for bed ... hopefully they have something left in the morning.

Great budget VPS hosting @ http://basshost.com

  • I don't use twitter that often so I'll go check it otu then on that

Still waiting for the activation code... oh well.

  • lumaluma Member

Once you get the Activation code it can take a few weeks (or more) to get the server.

They have not delivered servers for people who submitted the code on the first of june yet. I myself submitted my code on June 6th and have not received my server. I do see the pending order in the ovh manager though.

  • Still nothing with TweetDeck

I did it in early June and have not received anything.

    Daniel.

  • Didnt get a DM :(

I use http://tuxlite.com to configure all my VPSes and I love it!

  • @HalfEatenPie said: Still nothing with TweetDeck

Try @replying to them and asking what's up, or filing a ticket through their ass-backward Manager interface?

Also check the email associated with your Twitter account. Twitter sends DM notifications (with the text of the DM) to your email by default, IIRC.

They didn't put the 1Gbit in though.

  • I sent them an e-mail asking them what's up and this is basically what they told me.

    Hello,

First of all it's a lottery, so not all can receive a code. If you see no error message, just >try next day.

I also see that you ID is not validated. To validate, please send us proof of your name >and address:

Proof of name is a scan of your passport, drivers license or any other document that >proves your identity. For validation of address, send us a scan of utility bill, phone bill, >legal correspondence or similar, where we could see your name and address.

    Regards, OVH

Seems like there's more steps than they really did say. Also I find it kinda stupid how they never sent us the DM even though they said they sent it.

I live in the United States. my IP right now is South Korea because I'm here on vacation. When I sent that initial e-mail I also told them about it (put it out in the clear) so... I guess in the end it bit me in the rear.

I mean almost every low end deal I bought here I've always been caught in MaxMind so I'm kinda used to providing proof of who I am.

  • Bah, the times never match up for me.

They say "Today, 100 beta servers #BHS will be available at 5:00 UTC #OVH".

Ok, but is that AM or PM? So confusing.

AM/PM doesn't exist in Europe. At least not on the continent. And last time I was in England they also used the 24-hour-clock system.

The UK uses both, we're taught both in school and can switch between without converting and realising we're doing it.

  • Codes for beta tests are like lottery. If you didn't get one, just try another day.

Basically for those of us who didn't get codes, we weren't lucky enough.

  • @Daniel wait, not all people can do that? ^^, I create spreadsheets with timing as 24hour clock, it's much easier than screwing with Am/Pm :]

No, Americans think 24 hour clock is alien.

So do some of us Canucks.

Sorry, we have reached the limit of available servers for today. Please try again tomorrow!

Do these drop at the same time every day? When, exactly, is that – 01:00 EST?

what do you fill in as twitter username? just your login (your twittername)? or @yourtwittername or http://www.twitter.com/yourname

No, the time varies. They announce on Twitter what hour it'll be a few hours in advance and then they announce again 15 minutes before it starts.

  • They didn't announce 15 minutes before the Dedicated servers started but they did for the VPS.

    Catalyst Host - Pie Approved!
  • lbftlbft Member

Before the VPSes they were announcing 15 minutes in advance...I bet they got mixed up because the VPS and dedi times were so close.

Typical OVH, they know how to put on a good deal but they suck at organisation and communication.

  • Didn't get anything yet.

Great budget VPS hosting @ http://basshost.com

  • Wow, how fast do these run out? Or is OVH delayed on clicking the release button?

I have been spamming the validate button for a VKS exactly on time and even 4 minutes after they said they released the stock. Still says "Sorry, we have reached the limit of vKS available today. Please come back tomorrow.".

Yep, these things go fast as hell.......literally seconds.

Managed to get past their stupid Twitter passcode thing, then they are supposed to send you a Twitter message. Problem is, did not get one... So it seems that once you get passed their Twitter thing on the OVH website, it's a random draw, who they send the DMs to (just like others have said).

EDIT: If you make it to the activation thing, but never get an email, then you are done. You will need a whole new email and twitter account to retry.

  • Yeah its pretty ridiculous.
